Just Blocked Someone On YouTube...
« on: December 29, 2010, 09:06:09 AM »
As you may know, I post clips to YouTube now and then, as many of us do, to share guitars, tones, amps, pickups and effects with a wider audience.

And I got trolled, I think!  Got a notification from some w@nker on my Trilogy noodle, the comment was something along the lines of "I'm sorry to say, but you are not a musician".

To$$er!!!

Ok, I'm no Yngwie Malmsteen (hardly even his little sister, Gertrude...), but there was no call for that.

So I was a man about it; I let it fester for a few days, then I replied "don't be sorry, just keep your opinions to yourself".

His rely was swift - "no I wont (sic) bar-steward".

At which point I blocked him.

I think that the BKP forum sometimes gives a false sense that the internet is a nicer place than it actually is.

 :(

Must be brave.  Must me brave...

I've had it too mate, I replied asking for clips from them then it went quiet.

Best thing to do is to delete their comments and block them.  They just want to cause trouble.

These guys never seem to have clips of their own either!

Most folk apprecite the time youtube uploaders take to show their gear becuase the are usually very honest reviews of the gear in the clips.

I've just given you a thumbs up anyway (presuming you are playing a red strat in the vid.....)

The internet is breeding a whole generation who seem to be big men at their keyboard but probably wouldn't say boo to a goose in the real world.  To$$er indeed!

I've had it before. A particularly scathing one of my 'right hand technique' comes to mind. Unsurprisingly when I asked to see their videos and have some pointers on technique I got nothing in return!

As Tom has noted the internet makes it easy to be critical from a distance. Such a bad culture.
I think I hate being indecisive.

I'd disregard it Mr Bump old buddy if I were you-it is still getting at you otherwise wouldn't have posted this. We will never know of his own abilities and if all he can do is insult you then his comments are hardly valid.Deleting them is a good thing. It is a shame that there are many who have never the heard the old maxim "if you have nothing good to say then say nothing" as my old ma used to say ( and we lived in a very quiet household).

i got one recently from someone disagreeing with my technique for rolling fingerboard edges.  it made me laugh because it showed a real lack of knowledge on their part.

i have a few thumbs down as well - i would rather have a comment!

I had one too, kind of pissed me off for 2 days, didn't reply but noticed the person had no videos of their own.

They said I was playing triplets too, how is it triplets without a beat/accent?

Wez all your videos are great! Especially the tap tone one :D

My favourite so far has probably been "it was good but you were fat" So rude.

Thanks, guys - I'm over it now.

But I maintain, this is probably the best natured forum on the net!

I dunno about that. People are pretty much the exact same as they ever were, just the internet gives an anonymous outlet for it now. Not so much that people were nicer in the past, but that we thought they were and had nothing to prove us wrong, whereas now we do...

But yeah I mean there's a lot of trolling on the internet, I wouldn't worry about it. :)

Existing as I do in the extreme metal world, some of the stuff that gets said about my bands is hilarious, even more so my festivals, given they're so much higher profile. Lots and lots of vitriol about us on our own forums and on others, especially (hell, my festivals have had some pelters on here ). We've never taken to deleting owt though, I figure people can say what they like, as irritating as it might be sometimes.

Never posted anything myself on youtube though, which I suppose might be a little more personal than a band I'm in or a festival I organise.

Forget about it. Knowing full well that in the real world away from the computers that mummy and daddy bought them, they wouldn't dare say a thing to you. The computer makes them think they are some kind of internet warrior and they are significant.

The one thing I can't stand on Youtube is the comments people leave to videos of girls playing guitar. If the guitarist is good whether male or female then that's undeniable. But a girl guitarist who hasn't quite got a grasp on their technique or melody yet is still not 'omgz amzinz' just because she has boobies.

I think it's worth avoiding the assumption that these people are automatically young. In many cases, especially those folks trolling guitar players on youtube, more so if the guitar players are playing certain types of music, I'd be willing to wager that they people sniping are older, bitter, failed musicians.
