Now I'm getting confused a bit. The old 50 had a zinc base plate. The new 52 is copper plated steel, right?

I know mine has a zinc base plate.

Is the difference tonal between the two materials too little to notice?

It's the same steel - one has a zinc plate the other copper plate - the plating is to stop the steel rusting.
