My mind is finally made up (i thought)
« on: January 14, 2011, 08:38:38 PM »
Hi all, asked a few questions, rang up made my mind up mules, just one more thing to do before i finally order, problem is the one thing to do was listen to warpigs on a friends guitar see what they clean up like.I was impressed with gain full on both clean and dirty channells on a 50 watt  marshall valvestate ,guitar was a LP Tokai fitted with warpigs (covered) ,now turned volume right down on guitar ,it produced quite a warm bluesy tone on both channells .
Question is would the mules give me an even better bluesy tone ,as they are more suited to this ,and would they also give me a similar heavyness compared to the warpigs, or is there a massive difference i am now curious and back to square one as regards pups hmmm.

if you're trying to reach both extremes, you should try something in the middle
like a crawler or abraxas
apparently, the black dog can get pretty heavy

Mule and Warpig are different worlds.  I agree with Eric the Black Dog could unite those worlds.

Lower output pickups have less compression, and therefore the high gain tones tend towards crunch rather than the more saturated sound you'll have heard from the warpig.
Conversely, higher output pickups have more compression, and the clean tones have less 'bloom' as a result.

The black dog can get heavy, but for pure nastiness on the heavy tones, I personally prefer a higher output pickup. BUT, the cleans on the lower output pickups are stunningly good.

Mules will give you great clean tones and great rock tones, but when it comes to metal and harder tones, I don't think they'll sound great. They won't sound bad, mind, just not great.

There is no perfect all-rounder, but there are pickups which can do several things exceedingly well. You have to decide what is most important to you!

My impression from your post is that you're not after the broooootalz. The other main application for the warpig would be stoner/doom, but it is also used a little in some bluesy applications too, I understand. But for pure blues tones, the mules are a far, far, far safer bet!

The Black Dog is definitely a good choice if you want to cover both worlds.
I have no problem getting Megadeth/Metallica sounds with mine, especially when I put a booster in between. But as Roo pointed out, it won't match the brutality of the true high gain pickups.
Current BKPs: Miracle Man, Nailbomb, Juggernaut, VHII
Past BKPS: Holy Diver, Trilogy Suite, Sinner, Black Dog

Nolly playes Mules in his Black Machine and he squeezes out some wicked heavy tones out of that guitar.

Indeed, and I used to use black dogs in my WezV baritone custom, but I have gone back to higher output, more compressed pickups to achieve a different gain tone. The black dogs were great, but the aftermath is something else :) Plus it's tighter than a gnat's arse. But I digress.
