suggestion for Korina PRS
« on: January 18, 2011, 04:38:11 PM »
Hey guys. what do you think it's best for an all korina PRS McCarty?
I dig low output pickups and alnico magnets. Talking about Rock 'n' Blues.
I usually go through several stomp boxes or directly into my Fender Blues Junior.
Do you think Mules will do great or there is something I am missing. I've never had a korina wood guitar before.

Mules are great for this guitar and your musicstyle. Open, balanced, great dynamics. They can do everything from pristine cleans, blues, (classic) rock to even metal. You can listen clips on the website.
Mules, VHII, Crawler, MM's, IT's, BG50's.

I love the riff raff in my mccarty custom (mahogany, maple top)
but I think you would enjoy the mule better
I just ordered my first mule, by the way
Riff Raff, Mules, Black Dog, VHII's, Cold Sweat

I don't really have an answer, but I'm interested to see the responses because I also have a McCarty Korina.  :)

I don't think you could go far wrong with Mules, but are there any particular sounds you're after which the McCarty pickups won't do?  For example, if you find the McCartys a little soft-sounding, I think Mules would firm up the sound a bit; Riff Raffs would take it a stage further.

Thanks guys. I have the opportunity to change the McCarty pickups with 57/08s too - it will be about 45% more expensive compared to the Mules, but how about sound.
Can anyone compare McCarty pickups to 57/08 pickups to Bareknuckle Mules - tonewise.
(You know how PRS keeps it secret with their pickups, so if you know specs - please share).

I *think* you'll find that 57/08s and Mules are pretty similar.  McCarty pickups would be closer to a hotter Stormy Monday, a bit thick and dark.

Personally I'd go with the 57/08s in a PRS, but the cost is prohibitive!

I haven't tried the 57/08, but I've just swapped a 59/09 out of the neck position in my DGT. Personally, I was disappointed with the 59/09 as it performed in my guitar. In my DGT at least, it sounded a bit nasal, thin and had a very early treble cut off (like the tone control was wound back). It did however find it very good split - quite single coil like (so much so I sold my Tele). Others find them brilliant - so I guess it's all down to taste and how the pickup performs in a particular guitar and rig. However, given the price differential, I would have thought  the BKP route would be a no-brainer.

That's what I would've thought too.  But pure guesswork on my part - it's so difficult to find specs for PRS pickups.

Oh yes, I may have seen something similar before, now you mention it.

They still don't say the type of Alnico though.

Thanks again. I haven't seen the second table (there is no info in the first about the 57/08). Well, DC resistance is at least something. However I think I'll go with the Mules, and later when I save some money I will get another PRS which has the 57/08s in it.  :D Hopefully soon.
