I'm not sure if I should post this here or in tech, but I have a feeling you guys won't bash me too hard if I'm doin' it wrong and the thread will be moved before I come to physical harm. 8)
So, I posted a thread over at ss, but I'm not sure what the response will be. I'm prepared for a mix of "handwound is overrated! buy a Crunchlab" and "what are you... trying to copy Bareknuckle?" ...but not really, I'm just posting here as well because I tend to get more straightforward information at forums with smaller populations (such as you guys helping me out with my crazy household feedback spaz a few months ago).
Anyway, I want to try winding pickups for myself. It seems like the kind thing I could get into, seeing as I'm such a pickup geek anyway. My main problem is (everyone's main problem when it comes to winding pickups); suppliers! It's really really really difficult to find suppliers that have good selection and aren't strictly bulk-order oriented. People will often say "get a kit at stewmac" but *GASP* they only have two gauges of wire to choose from (both are poly), and one A5 magnet. I may well get a kit from them just to practice winding-tension, potting and such, but when it gets down to the real-deal I don't want to be stuck with just that. I want to know where I can go to get good quality whatever without having to order bulk. It doesn't have to be just one place, but it'd be nice to know where I can get wire (ideally plain enamel), slugs, screws, magnets and whatever else.
I'm just doing this for myself, but I'd like to make a pickup that's good sounding rather than one that's completely overshadowed by everything else I own. Yeah, I definitely have the experience and skill to pull that off... Right guise???/
I appreciate any help. Thanks everyone!
