Looking for a laptop
« on: January 23, 2011, 11:58:16 PM »
I wonder if anyone has an idea if i can get a laptop that has a firewire port and no optical drive... firewire ports seem to be being phased out.. and with my recording interface being firewire, i'm wondering if i should replace that or look out for a new laptop with a firewire port built in and stick with it.

This is because my macbook is almost 4 years old.. and will pack in at some point.

Im just starting to get interested in recording despite having my interface for about 2 years now...

Cheers
David.

Why do you want to get rid of the optical drives? Bad move now that some software is coming out on blu ray. Will be massive download only versions that will probably take the same amount of time to download as a hard copy would to arrive in the post.

Then again that kinda forces people to get blu ray readers so gladly there arent many instances of this so far

My ASUS UL30a doesn't have a drive, but you can always get adapters for FireWire can't you?

Why not replace it with a macbook pro? they have firewire 800 ports and are probably the best laptops out there.

i agree, they are the best.. but they are so expensive, i cant possibly afford one.

I want rid of the optical drive as i'd just use an external one.. i dont like having an optical drive built in as they break in my experience.. moving parts and all.

In my experience it isnt a problem if you dont have a mac as theyre changeable in about 5 seconds :P.

And macs are great but nowadays you can get a higher spec laptop and run mac osx on it far better and smoother for half the price.

I would love a mac pro though but i just cant justify it. Probably more to do with the limitations software wise than the price though.

i would have to lose so many VSTs due to there not being mac versions and not even being an equivalent thats as good
