Removing metal plating from hardware

How would one go about completely removing plating from a hardened steel bridge? Say I wanted to do a real F'd up industrial look on one, how would you go about removing either chrome or black without removing metal as well? I don't mind working with acids or doing reverse electrolysis, but I just wanna see what has worked best for others or pitfalls to watch out for. Thanks guys.

Well I tried two acids Phosphoric and Muriatic(Hydrochloric). Phosphoric was like trying to remove it with wet sock. Muriatic fizzed, bubbled, gave off stinky fumes AND TOTALLY FECKIN NAILED IT. For black hardware, it just dripped off leaving a very clean metal surface. I used a swap though and it only took a few secs of rubbing after a few secs of letting a thin swipe off it sit. I'd be careful though, I was getting the sense that it could eat the metal very fast so it was the kinda thing where I'd rinse in water before I was sure it was done. Thanks Afghan Dave.

You can only dance with a corpse in the moonlight for so long then it's a bathtub of acid and some relic parts hitting ebay to pay for the next batch of Rohypnol... :?

 :D Use plastic bins or something man. Hydrochloric eats porcelain and metal bathtubs. Eric, my 5150 is actually very evil right now.
