humbakers for M.Knopfler style
« on: February 18, 2011, 12:45:46 PM »
Hello
Sorry for my english, i am not englishmen

I want to buy humbakers on my Gibson LP for playing in M.Knopfler style
like this -
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wZyBmKbU0WY
And sometimes in Led zeppelin style
So i want to play in very low, low and middle gain - "bluesy rock", but not the blues

My friend recomend me "the Mule"in bridge and "Stormy monday" in neck

What do you recomend?
What do you say in this situation about  "RG blues"?
Thank you

I may be wrong but this really looks (and sounds) like mini-humbuckers to me:

I don't think you will get that kind of almost-single-coil clarity with full-sized humbuckers. But anyway: for the styles and tones you describe, you indeed want low-output, vintage-voiced pickups. I'd personnaly suggest Stormy Mondays or PG Blues  for this kind of Knopfler tone but I don't know how they'sd work for heavier Zeppelin stuff.

My 2 cents.

And welcome here BTW ;)

Thank you!
I think about minihum (P-90), but Mark has very good guitar  :D and i think humbakers on my guitar will be batter
So what yo think about combination
neck - Stormy monday
bridge - the Mule
Is it good combination, or batter buy humbakers of one type?

I saw P-90 and humb of this size - sounds great
So - forgot LZ, what you can recomend in M. Knopfler style:
P-90 Blue note,
P-90 nantucket
Mississippi Queen humbucker-size P90
Manhattan humbucker-size P90

P90s and mini-humbuckers are actually very different beasts - P90s are single-coil pickups.

These are not the same size as humbuckers, and won't fit in your LP - that is, unless your LP was routed for P90, but then you could as well just put minihumbuckers in it ;) (bad news: BKP doesn't make minihumbuckers).

I still think that Stormy Mondays or PG Blues would get you closer to MK's tone on the clip you posted (hint: there are sound clips for all the pups), but Mississipi Queens might work too. But you'd better wait until someone more knowledgeable chimes in - or even better, just ask Tim.

For Knopfler-tones you need a strat with Apaches. HB's that are musical and complex with lower output would be Mules. The SM in the neck will have a softer bass-attack.
Mules, VHII, Crawler, MM's, IT's, BG50's.

He's using full size humbuckers there - and just the neck one on this song

I would favour a pair of stormy mondays  - handle , jazz, blues and rock nicely
Mules would work well too but I think that I would go for stormy mondays

And for single coils - surely the Sultan set (as in sultans of swing) is the obvious Knopfler choice

hums: stormy monday
strat coils:  sultans

roy, i have a stormy monday neck in a les paul. they will give you the tones you want like knopflers les paul stuff.
they're great clean and distorted , a great neck pick up choice.
i don't have experience of the PG blues.

Dut what about the bridge? Two people recomend Mule
I dont need middle FQ, and i need 70-80 gibson sound, not 50'
So some people recomend MULE
