Orange AD30; any experience?
« on: March 01, 2011, 10:43:03 AM »
hi folks.  i'm lucky enough to have an array of quite nice amps, and wasn't looking for any more.  however, i've been offered a very good deal on an Orange AD30 head and 4x12.  i'm going tomorrow to have a look at it, and i was just wondering if any of you guys have had any experience of the amp?  if i had been after this amp, i think i might have preferred the 2x12 combo, but this is a rather good deal, if i like it.

As I remember a very nice el84 orange, think used by black crows, very sweet sounding amp

I had a single channel AD30 for years.

I used to set mine with gain at around 2, so that if I hit the guitar hard I had a small amount of breakup and if I backed off it was clean. I then used a few different ODs and boosts ontop to vary my drive tones.

If you set the gain about halfway and stick a treble booster infront of it, it'll sustain forever  8)

it sounds promising then.  and my amp thumper of choice is indeed a treble booster, so that sounds like fun :)

i'm looking forward to trying it out now

Played one a few times (borrowed from a friend), must say it's a nice dynamic amp with the wellknown Orange-crunch. This one drove me to the Rockerverb 50 head, which I bought at the end.

As regards the Black Crowes reference I think they used the AD30 all over Amorica (if I remember right).

Either way, the opening track on that album (I forget the name, a long time since I heard it) has the AD30 sound in spades so it's a really good indicator of what the amp can do.

tried the amp today.  i brought my Les Paul Custom, and i used a mexican Tele that was there.  lots of good tones!  it's actually like two good single channel amps in one head rather than the usual clean/dirty change.  really nice pushed cleans, great for a BB King type lead tone, cleans up very nicely from the guitar, and there's plenty of gain there if it's wanted.  not a metal amp, but if that's what i wanted i wouldn't be looking at this anyway!  great for AC/DC sounds and, as mentioned, Black Crowes.

so, i left a deposit :)   i'm clearly nuts, i have no need for another amp, but there you go.  i've looked elsewhere and the head is typically over £830, while the cab is generally over £600.  i've got the pair for £800.  seems like a good deal. it's been sitting in the shop for over 4 years, so i suppose he's glad to get rid of it.  anyway, i'm looking forward to bringing my new baby home :)

Gone. Still one of my top 5 albums of all time is Amorica
