Pickup upgrade advice-Metallica/Opeth combination?
« on: March 15, 2011, 04:25:14 PM »
Hey guys just wanted your opinion really.
Im hoping to upgrade my pickups, i currently play a PRS SE Custom 24 through a Mesa Single Rectifier + 1960 Marshall cab. What I am looking for is pickups that combine Hetfields tight bass response and massive chug with Opeths' clarity and versatility when it comes to playing interesting distorted chords and phrases. So it needs to be tight but also articulate.
I received an email response from the Bare Knuckle Team suggesting the Ceramic Nailbomb pickup (which i would place on the bridge). I am looking at maybe getting a Liquifire pickup for the neck for soaring solos.
Does this seem like a good combination for the sound I am going for? I ahve never looked into getting new pickups before so its all a bit daunting. Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

Hey thanks for that- by 'calibrated' do u mean having the Nailbomb on the neck and bridge?

a Calibrated Set would be where you order a pair of Nailbombs (in this instance) and Tim and the BKP guys would wind them to acheive the best possible balance between the pickups, where these are handmade, no two pickups are alike, but a calibrated set will be perfectly matched.

hope that helps

Ah wow ok, that sounds great- however what is the Nailbomb on the neck like for solos, etc? is it as amazing as the Liquifire?

never played a liquifire, the neck NB is very articulate and dynamic, and a bit scooped. works great for Opeth overdriven solo tones, but i'd choose a Cold Sweat set for your guitar and tonal needs
Mule, MQ, Stockholm, CS, RY, MM, PK, ANB, CNB, AWP, CWP, PiG90...

too many? ;)

Hey man thanks for that-however regarding the cold sweat i am a bit concerned its not as high output as i would need for the bridge;may work on neck but not sure of it being a tight option for the bridge though

cold sweat bridge is extremely tight, and you don't need high output pickups to play Opeth - you'll need CS articulation and note separation to play them properly, though... anyway the ceramic Nailbomb is an excelent bridge pickup!

I actually found the cold sweat to be hotter in feel than the nailbomb it was also considerably tighter.

and also had a voicing that i liked :P

i wouldn't say that, but for sure more articulate...

Im thinking the stock NB not the ceramic one.

I actually don't have any experience with the cbomb as i was put off too much from the original. I should check it out though

I just got a C-bomb a few days back and its awesome! Couldn't be happier with it. Its really tight and clear under high gain and has sweet harmonics, yet its not fizzy at all in any way. Its basically perfect!

C-Bomb or A-bomb bridge and a Cold Sweat neck. I always recommend the Cold Sweat neck to Liquifire lovers. Once you've installed it, I'm sure you'll see why :D
