The Boss
« on: March 19, 2011, 08:41:19 AM »
Anyone on here got any experience with The Boss bridge pickup? I'm going to be trying to get my build finished before my twins arrive (in about 5 weeks) and am looking for a pickup.

It's going to be an esquire (to keep costs and time down) and I want the output to be quite hot. It's an ash bodied jobbie and will in all likelihood have a maple neck and board.
I think I hate being indecisive.

Nope. But I think you could consider the BG50-10k bridge too, which is even hotter.

I'd forgotten about the 10k BG. I already have a BG Flat 50, are they noticeably different in sound to that or just with more balls?

gwEm or Jonathan can tell you about the Boss, if no-one chips in on this thread.

I think the new BG50 is significantly different from the old BG50, which is now the BG52.  Comment from Tim here:

Cheers Philly - must have missed that! Obviously I now have a BG52, not a BG50!

yeah, I like the Boss. I got one after recommendation from Jonathan. its got a perfect 1980s hard rock vibe. I prefer it to the Piledriver in fact. The Boss needs more love I reckon :)

its a very versatile pickup, not too much twang either.

I got a boss bridge pickup in a tele matched with a irish tour in the neck.   It is a pickup that I have not always got on with.  I find it has not got as good a clean tone has the yardbirds which are in another guitar. So for anything clean it would always be the other axe. Where it does excel for me is heavy/Metal (though i tend to not to play much metal these days).   For me I much perfer this pickup with a more marshall sounding amp than a fender sounding one.  In truth this is one of them pickups that I keep toying with swapping but I have been thinking that for a couple of years and still not got round to it.

The Boss is one of my favouritre BKP pickups
It will do anything from blues to metal

I guess it was aimed as a Springsteen flavoured pickup but I found it worked great for 70s and 80s rock
If I needed some cleaner tones I agree with RR that the Yardbird is my first choice - the Boss is more like Yardbird on Steroids

I need to make myself a tele with a Boss bridge again and maybe a stormy monday/mule in the neck (unless I fancy a TV Jones Gretsch style pickup in the neck)

I've tried an esquire with a Boss once and only for a short time. I agree with gwEm that the Boss hasn't got much twang. It sounded good though. Quite ballsy if i remember correct.

The BG50-clips are nevertheless inspiring.

I was hot on that idea for a while too, but all the TV Jones clips I heard sounded a bit flat and uninteresting - I used a P90 instead and it worked a treat.
