help setting up intonation a floyd rose
« on: March 24, 2011, 02:23:44 PM »
hi all,

finally got a floyd rose for my BC Rich superstrat but want a little help setting the saddles correctly for intonation.

this only has two holes in the base plate to set the individual saddles, then a allen bolt for fine adjustment.

I use 11s and was wondering if anyone has a photo of a floyd up close so I can set the intonation stagger by eye.

Cheers  :band1:

normally two sloping line
High e furthest forward , then b , and G furthest back
D furthest forward , then A then Low E

That's the right kind of "stepped" stagger, but I'd expect the D string saddle to be about level with the B, the A with the G and the low E furthest back of all.

Problem is, it also depends if the bridge studs are in the right place - you could get the relative saddle stagger right but still find they're all sharp or all flat!

+1

i just have 2 floyd guitars, but its true the bridge studs /are/ in slightly different places.

Thanks for the replies guys, but I'm gonna have to send this floyd back (floyd number two).

I'm getting a little pee'd off with this now - are there ANY decent people left on ebay ??? (don't answer that, I'm venting, argh!!!!).  I feel better now

I'm at the stage now where rather than trying to 'fix up' this BC Rich, I might just put something in the £500 range on buy now pay later - it'll be paid off within twenty gigs (currently averaging 4-6 a month).

I'm not sure I understand your problem. Is the thing in bits and you've not got an idea which of the bolt holes you should be using or is there another issue?

If you've got a proper Floyd one of these is invaluable for setting the intonation. http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Tools/Special_tools_for_Bridges/The_Key.html?actn=100101&xst=3&xsr=254 However if it's a licensed unit or and Ibanez edge then that key wont necessarily work.

Setting floyds up initially is a right $%&#ing pain in the arse, but once you're there, it's a lot easier to keep them there.

There are 10 kinds of people who understand binary.
Those who do and those who do not.

i agree entirely that initially its a royal pain but once its set up its generally easy to adjust.

The key thing i learnt was to loosen the string first before adjusting the allen bolt......

I've always pressed the bar down to take the tension off the strings before moving the saddle.

I've only ever had one Floyd - hated setting it up, hated changing strings, and after all that I didn't like the feel of it at all..... never again.

If I had to have a trem (which I don't!  ), I much, much prefer the Fender (or PRS) type.  And if it had to be locking, I'd go Kahler.

All of which is completely irrelevant.  Sorry.
