Nantucket vs. Supermassive
« on: March 25, 2011, 01:55:55 PM »
Hey!

New to the forum,

Just have a quick question about p-90's

I'm looking for a replacement dogear pu for my LP jr. I play mainly alternative rock and punk music, and occasionally dabble in metal-ish and also bluesy/garage rock stuff. I'm looking for a nice punchy p-90 tone with plenty of body and clarity, somewhere along the line of a slightly more gainy Greenday/Sugarcult tone.

I play through a DSL100, and also have a BKP'92, Nailbomb and seymour duncan JB

Initially the supermassive caught my eye, but tim suggested the nantucket

I'd like to see what you suggest, so any help will be much appreciated

Thanks :)

Richard

Welcome!
Honestly either could work, but I can see why Tim recommended the Nantucket - it's got a very punchy midrange and a springy bottom end response that sounds excellent under gain. The Supermassive ups the saturation quite considerably, while the resonant peak drops down into the more mid-midrange area, giving a thicker and more focussed tone.

Thanks for the reply :)

Would the nantucket still work as well as the supermassive for the high gain applications? as that's my primary use.

The pickup that's in there at the moment is really snappy and awful, no mid range punch at all, and still sounds almost clean even when overdriven!

That description of the nantucket does sound nice though!

I think if you're really worried about the output the Supermassive would be the safe choice but, as I say, I can see why Tim has recommended the Nantucket.

What is the pickup that's in there at the moment, and how "high-gain" are you talking here?

The one that's in there at the moment was made by the luthier that created the guitar i beleive...it's a Gordon Smith GS-1 (left handed lp jr copy). According to them, the output of that pup is ~10k, but i find that hard to beleive, it just so difficult to get a decent distorted sound out of it.

As for gain, no heavier than say A Day To Remember / I Am Ghost

Thanks

In that case, I would recommend trying the Supermassive first :)

In case I wanted to put 2 soapbar p90s on the bridge, wired in series, which ones would you recomend? 2x supermassive? supermassive + nantucket with the supermassive nearer the bridge? Others? I'm looking for a midrangey sound for leads, with the possibility of using just the p90 nearer the bridge for a raunchy rythm sound.

Yes, I'm thinking that Manson guitar, just instead on a tele.

Cheers
Black Dog (b), Abraxas (b), The Mule (n), Mississippi Queen (n), Trilogy Suite (m)

Had: Riff Raff 7 (b), Painkiller 8 (b)

You would have to ask the Bareknuckle team that one!

Yep. The Nantucket is voiced like the oldschool-Gibson P90's from the fifties/sixties.

Sounds good :D
But that sounds like the sort of thing I'm looking for in the bridge too? Lr is it less compressed than the Supermassive/Stockholm?
Also, it sounds like the Stockholm is just a big Supermassive right?

Yep the Stockholm has more hair/output then the already midfocused Supermassive. If you're looking for classic open but raw P90's-tones like in old Gibson, I would certainly check out the Nantuckets. They sound a lot less compressed then the higher ouput brothers like the Supermassive. I think they're more versatile too.
