« on: March 31, 2011, 08:49:29 PM »
i was looking at the ibanez website... i'm not completely sure that i need a tubescreamer, but - in case i decide to try it - what model should i consider? TS808? TS9? TS9DX?
Mule, MQ, Stockholm, CS, RY, MM, PK, ANB, CNB, AWP, CWP, PiG90...

if you can solder by numbers the BYOC classic overdrive is a clone of the original ts808 and is far far cheaper.

I owned a TS9 in the past and it wasn't very good at all. In fact i preferred the digitech bad monkey over it.

The classic OD/TS808 is fantastic though

I think the BYOC would be great.

But if you don't want to solder the ToneriderAmerican OD  is a very good TS type pedal.  I prefered it to the TS9 anyway....

and the american overdrive has true bypass! ibanez ones don't, the original ibanez tubescreamers were made by maxon

Well I'm not sure if it's a clone as such but certainly in a similar ball park.

Another idea would be a BB preamp clone.  I've just built a Madbean Glitteratti which sounds excellent.  Like a tubescreamer but thicker and crisper with an active EQ

The BB Preamp sounds nothing like a Tube Screamer.

I've found that it depends on what sort of amp you have whether you choose one Tubescreamer over another. I have a TS808 which I love to bits through my Fender-ish Cornell Romany. It did very little in front of my Plexi and I only held onto it in case I one day got a more Fender-ish amp which I then did and it's become my favourite pedal since that moment. For me TS808 into something Fender-ish = big win.

I agree. The BB is good, but sounds different then a TS9 or 808. I have an original 81 TS9 which I like for some purposes. Not on every amp though.

Maxon 808 or for a bit smoother the 820. The mix pot works wonders on these.

The 820 is a good allround pedal! Will do some heavier stuff too.
