Possible Amp Trade
« on: April 06, 2011, 04:34:22 AM »
Yo!

So I'll keep this pretty simple.  I have two amps: an Engl Savage 120, and an Engl Fireball 100 (I bought for a back up, and gigging).

If one had the opportunity to trade the Fireball for an EVH 5150 III, would one do that?  I'd like to hear everyones opinions.

Thanks!

I think its a fair swap, but which do you like best? - Fireball or 5153?

To be honest it has been a long time since I tried the 5153, but I do like that there are 3 separate channels  that have thier own EQ.

I guess since I already have a Savage, I would want the 5153 to help diversify my sound.  I do like the way the 5153 sounds, and it sounds very different from what I have heard of the Engl line up.

I would. The 5153 is an absolute monster of an amp.

There's only one way to find out!!
I think I hate being indecisive.

Heh.

Hey Dazza, what do you like best about the 5153?

I like the Fireball 100 because it sounds most like an old Marshall that is hotroded, but retains that signature Engl sound.  I assume that the 5153 sounds similar to a Marshall too, since it is EVH's amp and he loves that Marshall sound.

The last time I heard the 5153, it was when I saw God Forbid at a smaller venue and I loved their tone.  They tuned pretty low, it sounded like C-standard (which is what I like to tune to).

I guess what I am going for is an amp that can sound open like a Marshall, and still get a great metal tone.  The Engl pulls it off the sound well, but lacks the versatility of 3 channels with seperate EQs.  Plus I was thinking of having 2 different amps to help make my sound versatile.

Maybe I just want to hear "Get a 5153, dummy!" from other people... 8)

Things I like about the 5153

plug and play, don't spend more than 30 seconds playing with the settings independent of the venue.
Switchable loop, comes in handy, I set my loop pedals on the amp and therefore they don’t take up room on the board, plus I don’t have to run long cables.
Used it with V30’s and G12-65’s (greenback like), sounds good with both so I suspect it’s not that fussy with speakers, that’s not to say there’s no difference though.
Reliable, I think the early ones had issues but had mine over 2 years, plenty of gigs and rehearsals, no problems
3 good usable channels,
Channel 1 can get a really nice clean tone, however, as it’s got a gain control you can use this as dirty channel if you want. Use a ts or similar and ac/dc no problem. It’s probably the most open of the 3.
Channel 2, not as much gain as some may like but it’s never been a problem for me. This is the early marshall on steriods channel. Sounds big and full, I use this for 99% of the time live.
Channel 3, tons of gain, I run it with the gain on about ¼, this is the channel I use for solos. It’s quite compressed but has a good feel to it.

It’s a flexible but no bs amp. The tone is good, in all honesty, if I won the lottery I would probably go for an SLO, XTC or Freidman but I am happy with the 5153.

I took the EVH cr@p off the front, here’s a pic without it

Where are you based ?

Very cool!  Sounds like the amp would be up my alley.  I was eyeing the Ivory model too.  I really want to try this amp now!

I am based right outside of Detroit, Michigan; in the States.

I think the EVH is an killer amp for the price. But if you really like the Fireball, why swap?

Probably for more diversity in my tone.  Also, just for a change   :D

Just get the 5150III and don't look back. You have a Savage so your ENGL desires are fulfilled. The only problem will be deciding which one will be the backup now. That's my stand.

I may be able to trade the Fireball for a Soldano Hot Rod 50.  What do you guys think?  Soldano's are sweet, but if I get one I would really want the SLO 100.

Man...these are the tough decisions in life!
