Bring me up to date with current medium low wattage amps
« on: April 09, 2011, 04:01:22 PM »
Hey guys long time no see!

In the band I'm currently playing in, I'm using my MIJ Deluxe Tele through a Laney VC15 and I'm pretty happy with the sound but I'm finding that I'm wishing for just a tiny bit more volume and headroom. So I'm considering trading to a slightly bigger amp, some kind of 15-30W combo probably. Been pretty busy with other things in life in the last year or so, so not been keeping up to date with new guitar gear at all. Could you guys please recommend me what you'd pick out of what's available today?

Thanks! Kaz

there is also a KT66 head that sounds great.
These heads are great. I think JPF will have video clips up soon.

I just love my Orange Tiny Terror. Switched the tubes to make it even better.
This thing can do a some clean, great overdrive for anything blues or rock and can even go up to metal terretory.
Depending on your choice of tubes you can amplify certain of these characteristics nicely.

So far I never had a volume problem, especially after switching the EL84s. First there is laughing from other musicians, then they just tell me to turn it the $%&# down and compliment me on my tone.

You can also get the dual terror, which has 30/15/7 Watts, were the normal one has only 15/7 Watts, which is enough, believe me.

If you are into british sounds this thing is amazing.
BKPs in use: 10th set / RY set / Holy Diver b, Emerald n / Crawler bridge, Slowhand mid MQ neck/ Manhattan n
On the sidelines: Stockholm b / Suppermassive n, Mule n, AM set, IT mid

Yeah I was thinking along the lines of Laney VC30, Orange Rocker 30, Blackstar HT20 etc. Anything worth looking at that's come out recently? I tried a VHT 18W in a shop the other day and it was ok, but the build quality was shocking the pots just wobbled about as if they weren't properly bolted to chassis.

I've hated the tiny terror every time I played it so I'm not sure I'd get on with it. Never tried the combo version though.

Egnater Rebel 20, Vox Nighttrain, Jet City JCA20H, Phaez Daisycutter, Engl Gigmaster, I have a schematic for a 20watt 6V6 push-pull Plexi. Sommatone's Slick-18, Roaring 20, Roaring 40 & Overdrive 35. Orange TH30.

The list could get big.

thomann's getting the traynor ycv50b back into stock in may... if you're in no rush.

Only tried the 40 (which seems to be pretty similar except with 6L6es and a worse speaker), but it was really nice. I don't know of much else for the money (~£400 depending on the exchange rate) which'd be better.

Maybe that's more wattage than you want, though. But I mean if you consider that the vc30 used to be £300 and is now more like £500, and that when traynor had UK distributors it was £700...

I know what I'd go for. :D

EDIT: the only reason I haven't picked one up myself is that I got a good deal on a laney gh50l just before thomann did that deal on the traynors, and as they're both marshally, I figured they'd be too similar to justify having both

Used Rivera Chubster should be on your short list if you can find one where you are.

I've got the Krank Rev Jr. To my knowledge it's the only "little amp" that will do gut-wrenching, wall-shattering death metal if required. Probably not what you're looking for. ;-) Nice amp, a bit aggressive though.
Current BKPs: Miracle Man, Nailbomb, Juggernaut, VHII
Past BKPS: Holy Diver, Trilogy Suite, Sinner, Black Dog

Thanks for ideas guys, the Orange TH30 looks promising.

The MJW I'm sure is sweet but looking for a combo really.

I did see that may well be interested. Do you still live in Hudds?

Cheers, I forgot about the ENGL Classic 50. 1x12 is about as big as I want to go. I think there's one in a local shop.
