Pickups for a Gibson SG
« on: April 20, 2011, 01:48:06 PM »
Hey folks.  I was wondering...  What's a good BK pickup to put in a gibson SG for a really ballsy rhythm tone?  Its for a friend of mine who is looking for a really meaty and ballsy tone who plays strictly rhythm.  He plays some leads too but his top priority is crunch.  In his SG now i assume there is the 490R and 498T pickups from gibson.  I have those in my les paul and they sound great but I think they make the SG sound a little bit thinner and "sharp" than he would like.
Any suggestions?
Thank you.

Thanks
Im not so sure he is looking for something with such high out-put.  I know his favorite tones are from bands like AC/DC, Judas priest and accept.... pretty much along those lines.  Are there any pickups that are ballsy like the warpig but have a more old-school Chunk to them?  maybe your right though, the war pig may just be up his alley

Musicstyle and the amp are important too. Black Dogs are ballsy too, but in a vintage way.
Mules, VHII, Crawler, MM's, IT's, BG50's.

I believe the received wisdom with an SG is to either go high output or low output, hence you get suggestions of Warpig and Black Dogs. I'm guessing Riff Raffs would be an option too, though I've never played them.
BKP owned:

Bridge - Emerald; Cold Sweat; Crawler; A-Bomb; Holydiver; Miracle Man; Sinner; Trilogy Suite

Neck - Emerald; Cold Sweat; Crawler; Holydiver; Sinner; Trilogy Suite

Black Dogs may be a bit too middy?

Riff Raffs are great pickups in SGs, but aren't thick sounding unless your guitar/amp combo is?

Was just talking to him.  He basically wants a tone along the lines of angus young.  So i figure AC DC tone.... SG....  Riff Raffs?

Riff Raffs for Angus, for sure.

But I don't think they'll sound less thin/sharp than the 498T and 490R.  They will give a classic bright, edgy SG tone.
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM

the riff raff in my sg sounded quite thick
for like 5 minutes :(
then the headstock just snapped again (cr@ppiest neck repair ever)

but I think he would be safer with the black dog or the warpig
the alnico warpig is more growly than the 498t, but not much higher output
it's fatter and more grainy, but less muddy

Riff Raff, Mules, Black Dog, VHII's, Cold Sweat

I only have first hand knowledge of a warpig and MQ in my sg.  I must say for a nice fat rhythm..my choice is for the MQ no doubt.
Have him check out some MQ clips to see if he like the P90 sound.

If he does not like any hum, then a noise gate might be needed depending on the situation.  Well worth it though!!!!
Mississippi Queen Set = Gibson SG Standard
Warpig = '88 Charvel Model 1
