Eric, where do you purchase these Black Dogs mate?

from MG Music (brazilian company)

they used to cost around 150 british pounds a pair, but now they are around 250
I guess shipping them internationally would get expensive
you'll probably get close results with a weber silver bell, that's only US$100 a piece
but the black dogs aren't behind any celestion I had, or even the scumbacks

you can contact their CEO, Marcelo Giangrande at marcelo@mgmusic.net or talk to him on orkut

here's some rough clips of the 50w version:

and also a comparison with a 1977 Celestion Rola G12M blackback with the original 55hz cone:

Well I decided to go for a pair of scumbacks - specifically the J75 LHDC which is a speaker voiced between the G12m and G12h but with the high end slightly rolled off with the large dust cap. Sounds great in clips but I won't know untilI get them.

Thanks for your advice guys

I hope you like them, I didn't like the rolloff that the large dustcap gives comparing them to the regular Scumbacks and am having mine reconed by Weber with small dustcaps.

for anyone who doesn't know - Weber make Scumback speakers to Scumback's specs.

Well my thinking was that the J75 is a bit brighter than the M75 so the LHDC should roll off a bit of the extra treble whilst retaining the tighter low end. The Golds Im using at the moment have that soft top end and that is what I wanted to replicate.  - do you think its the wrong way to go?

My speakers were M75-LHDC, so you might have more success with the J series (which weren't available when I got mine).  I am also using them with a Ceriatone Dumble clone in an Ear Candy cab, which has a ton of bass anyway.  I probably wanted more brightness out of them and after hearing D&L's regular M75, preferred that sound.  Since a Weber recone is only $25, I decided to go that route.  I think they'll be a big contrast to the Golds (though I've not heard them, only the Blues).

I am after a different sound to the golds - more crunch specifically but like the soft top end

I'd go for the PRS between the two man; I always find that a signature model is limiting in the setup for an optimal sound. It'll still sound ace doing other stuff, but it'll sound best...well, playing ZW/BLS type stuff.
