Contrary to popular beliefe, single coils can create an uber metal tone. My friends Fender '62 Reissue(S/S/S) can produce a sound similar to my Dean V (H/H) in the same amp, at the same settings.
Just thought i'd add that in...

Yeah, Jap Strats are a good deal. Whatever you do, you're better off buying second hand. There's not really any good reason to buy new, unless you just like the thought of owning something that no one else has first.

I'd go for a Jap Strat. I have both a USA Strat and a Jap and, to me, the Jap is put together better. The electrics are the only thing that are a bit iffy ( and you are gonna rip out the pups and fit Apaches right?). I have a Mexican Tele ( now with Country Boys) and it is a nice plank- well made and solid. I have not tried a Mex Strat. Twinfan mentioned John Blackman-  he was a web site www.fareastguitars.com I think - he has a good reputation for importing excellent Jap Strats. Apparently the Strats made for the Jap home market are superior- or so they say.

thanks a ton mates,

i think i am gonna try as many strats as possible, even a second hand would do as i would be eventually putting in a set of Irish tours or apaches.

Do you think its better to have a humbucker at the bridge to be more versatile or someting like a sinner/Triology would do just as good? I am NOT into Death/Thrash metal. The heaviest I can get is Purple (Morse tone) or Good ol' maiden and AC/DC.

Check out the clips! I have a couple of Sinner clips and there are some others too. I am constantly amazed by the sound of the Sinner. It's like no other single coil I've ever played--and I've played a ton of 'em.

I second the Uber Sinner!

I've said it before and I'll say it again a single coil size with this much power, that still sounds like and IS a single coil....

That's what BKP bring to the table!

I'd say look out for a Japanese one as well. They are quite rare in the UK but there are places that sell them.  It's quite common for people to buy them then replace the pickups with the better Fender ones. Obviously BKP's would be even better.

Like some of the other fellas have said, from personnal experience I'd seriously recommend getting a Fender Jap strat. you can get decent secondhand ones off ebay for around £250 - £350 'ish.

They really are just as good as American standards/Mexicans/highways etc.  in my humble opinion.

About 6 months ago I was in a similar situation to yourself, thinking about up grading from my trusty Korean made Fender Squire, which was a good guitar to learn on , but my Jap strat. just sounds and plays amazing , the stock American vintage pickups are pretty good.

I recently fitted a set of Irish Tour pickups and its just an awsome guitar now, I use a Fender super 60 vlave amp, all I can say is that it ROCKS  ........ + you can ease off and get all those sweet , warm Strat tones too - it does it all between the guitar and the pickups.

I can honestly say i don't think I'll ever need another guitar now.

I'll go with willo on that last sentiment.

Have a look at some PRS guitars.  8)

and of course the price tag :(

As for  getting a back on topic. The jap strats are really good. It depends on the budget as well. The American deluxe Strats are.... actually exeptional bits of gear. I own one and love it. I have a few other guitars and like all of them but something about the feel of my Am DLX Strat is quite amazing.

Looking back I would now have gone for a H/S/S strat. But 20/20 vision is always perfect in hindsight.

If your looking for some heavier sounds (AC/DC), Get an Alder body with Rosewood Frettboard. It does all the normal strat stuff but can get really dirty aswell. "basswood" is not bad either (sonically) but is quite soft and dents really easy.

I liked the Mex strat I bought more than the 'affordable' US ones I tried.

I tried a couple of Jap Strats and liked them more but couldn't justify another strat.

Charlie Chandler appears to stock Jap strats http://www.guitarexperience.co.uk at around £440 upwards.

I'd like to put some bare knuckles in my mex strat, but all my money went on a Ric 360-12 and won't have any money to spend for ages :(
