Favourite Hendrix song
« on: May 18, 2011, 07:49:24 PM »
Lets praise the great master by telling which of his songs that's our favourite and why.

Mine is "Bold as love". It begins with what I regard as the classic Hendrix playing technique and tone which I really dig and then moves on to become more power rock oriented with some classy psychedelic lead - the best of two worlds. I also think that the melody is quite catchy and suits the song well.

I just noticed how the Mothers Milk 60's rock clip that Nolly have made for the BKP homepage reminds me of "Bold as love" and I guess that's why I find this clip so unbelieveably nice  :D

So what's your favourite Hendrix song?
Mississippi Queens, Stormy Monday/Apaches, Emeralds, Nailbomb (bridge)

So many too chose from....

But for me its Hear My Train a'Coming - the perfect blend of blues with Jimi's psychedlic guitar.  That and no two recordings are the same, so you get great variations of Jimi at the height of his powers.

alternatively the cover of Daytripper on the BBC Sessions is just massive.
BKPS: Milks, P90s, Apaches, Mississippi Queens, Mules, PG Blues, BG FP 50s, e.60s strat custom set

Yes!!  I thought I would be the only person who would vote for Stars That Play with Laughing Sam's Dice!  Choucas, you are my brother.

Also, check out Bleeding Heart (Blues in C Sharp) from The Jimi Hendrix concerts.  One of the best blues performances you will ever hear.

I think I'd find it impossible to choose between Voodoo Chile (slight return) and Little Wing. Both are extremely memorable songs with inventive, passionate guitar, killer tone and proper Hendrix spaceship to the edge of infinity blues cool.  If it's a cover then Star Spangled Banner from Woodstock is as coherent a piece of political and social commentary as one guitarist, a Strat and a bajillion watts of Marshall grunt could muster I reckon.

I'm glad this thread has appeared because JH is normally discussed as a great guitarist, but equally he was a great songwriter. As has been said there are so many to choose from, but the other day I was out and about and Gypsy Eyes came on and gave me goosebumps.

...yeah 38th, there's just too much confusion...I can't find no relief

I would say that All Along the Watchtower is not so much a cover as a re-interpretation  8)

And, for anyone who has not watched the remake of Battlestar Galactica - the song was not written by Bob Dylan but by a Cylon 152,000 years ago!

Little Wing all the way for me. His cover of Like a Rolling Stone is also great!
I think I hate being indecisive.

God, it's such a long time since I listened to any Hendrix!  :o

First thing that springs to mind is "Who Knows" from Band of Gypsys, for some reason.... also love "Them Changes" from that album, although it's a Buddy Miles song... but let me think...

I always preferred Electric Ladyland to the earlier albums, and although it's not a very imaginative choice, I'm going to have to go for "All Along the Watchtower".  It's a rare case where a cover version completely eclipses the original and becomes the definitive version.  It's extraordinary.  And I think it's one of those recordings where neither the song nor the performance could be any better - not just good, not just excellent, but 3 or 4 minutes of absolute perfection (other examples: "Ace of Spades" by Motorhead and "Don't Believe a Word" by Thin Lizzy)

I'm probably forgetting some great songs though....
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM
