Iommi-esq Accident

The guitarist in my bass players other band has just had an accident at work - cut of his thumb and most of his fingers in a machine related accident.  His fretting hand too.

I don't know the fella - have met him a few times.

Puts things in to perspective... Maybe too much perspective...

oh, that is nasty.  i know they can do amazing things these days, as long as the circumstances are right, so hopefully they can do something with him.  probably is the end of his guitar playing though, at least for quite some time.

Yikes!  Hopefully they can save his fingers, but I do fear he won't be able to play again. 

My dad lost a finger years ago (lawnmower accident  :x ) and they were able to save it, but he never got full mobility back.  But maybe medical science has improved in the meantime.

i have a friend which had some of his fingers blown off in afghanistan in january. they have fitted them all back. He can bend them now, but its still a long road before he can use them fully again

Did anyone watch "Inside the Human Body" on the BBC last night? It was about our defences etc, but at the end there was this bloke in the US who has had a double hand transplant.

I was dumbfounded watching it. Not to mention a little squeamish... I don't fancy the idea of transplants anyway, not even a blood transfusion... but seeing the dead hands dangling before they attached them made me realise I'm not sure I could ever get used to looking down and seeing someone else's hands.

Still, I was stunned that it's apparently possible now. Within hours he was able to move the fingers under his own will...

If they're able to do that, and if the fingers were salvagable in time then I guess all might not be lost. But sheesh, still makes me shudder to think about this poor guy.

Nasty accident and although I don't know him, I hope that they can do something to make his hand usable.The loss of a thumb is a nightmare- let alone the loss of fingers and indeed, for many of us here it is a sobering thought particularly when we think we are having a bad day.
I deal with many such matters in my job and it always makes me shudder.

My worst nightmare too.

If I would lose all my fingers I'd probably get some sort of prosthetic made that will allow me to play open tunings with and without slide. Or learn to play southpaw and some way to hold a pick.
