Popping noise from speaker cab
« on: May 29, 2011, 02:18:31 PM »
Hey guys im getting a very quiet popping noise every now and then from my peavey cab

It isn't regular and seems to be completely random.

At first i thought it could be the amp so i tried it with other amps and its still there.

I'm thinking it could possibly be the input jack?

or could it be the actual speaker wiring?

Heres a recording that i boosted a bit so it was more audible

As i said it doesnt do it regularly. Sometimes it doesnt do it at all just every now and then it will do it for a minute or so

weird!!!  :?

(1) is it making this noise with nothing plugged into the amp?
(2) have you tried swapping speaker leads?
(3) have you tried a different mains lead? (assuming this isn't hard-wired to the amp, which I seem to recall it might be)
(4) have you tried a different mains socket?

I havent tried a different speaker cable as i dont have a spare.

However i have tried just running the marshall combo and that does the same thing so i believe it could be mains related.

Later on when i can be bothered ill lug it all into the front room and try it in there.

If it is the mains is there anything i can do about it as i cant really use the amp in the main room and the spare room is full of the Mrs' clutter and makeup etc ( i wanted the room for guitar stuff but she claimed it :()

If it's mains-related, it could be something like a fridge or boiler kicking in

maybe a UPS could solve the mains issue? i know we used these in the past with digital rackmounted installation mixers. it kept resetting itself in the bar everytime the fridge kicked in. the tension dropped and the unit went haywire and started flashing lights. the bar owner bought a UPS and we never heard any trouble.

Electrician here. Try unplugging the fridge and see if the problem persists. Boiler too if it's turned on. Also check the wiring hasn't come loose in the back of the socket. Turn the power off before you do that obviously. Chances are though it's something else that's plugged in to household power that's doing it.

A ups would likely sort it out as mentioned before. Fridges are a common problem because they leak voltage to earth.

One with isolated grounds would be good then. I have two power filters, an APC that sits on the floor and a Furman that goes in the rack. The Furman was over 5 times the cost of the APC that was for home theatre and I can't tell the difference between the two, but can when I occasionally take my stuff somewhere without one of them. I bought the APC on sale during Christmas for $30 and it does the trick beautifully. I think they're about twice that normally, but a huge savings compared to a rack thing that regulates voltage as well as smoothing out spikes and taking care of ground/earth problems.

it was none of the above.

It was my Laptop....

I noticed it when i wasn't playing along with any backing tracks so the laptop wasn't on.

I can't believe i didn't think of this

Thanks guys

laptop PSU's have sloppy grounds. alot of noise problems customers had were solved by either moving the laptop PSU to another outlet, or to use a ground lift adaptor.
