manowar
« on: June 14, 2011, 08:25:38 PM »
now obviously, i appreciate the fine qualities of certain manowar tracks. but i do wonder many points about them. for example:

* are they serious?
* how popular are they.. really?
* has anyone been to a manowar concert? any good?
* can anyone sit through a whole album of their material?

my favourite manowar tracks are 'hail and kill', 'the gods made heavy metal' and 'die for metal', but i wouldn't really say i liked them as a band.

what are people saying to them?

I like them for comedy value. The fact they are serious makes it even more amusing.

I like some tracks. black wind fire & steel. The flight of the bumblebee bass cover is wild.
the vocals at the very start of blood of the kings (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P2q5kidXHuo&feature=related) are also crazy.

I find all the talk of their gear being modded to be louder than everyone elses stuff, or them just being super loud a bit tedious.

EDIT: Warriors Prayer is a banger too.

1. they take themselves VERY VERY VERY seriously. Kill the infidels seriously.
2. The following they have is very devoted, but none have the IQ to see that they're utter cr@p, so just the retarded people of the metal community (which is quite large come to think of :P )
3. No, i haven't seen them live, nor do i wish to
4. I can't sit through one song, let alone two, so no.. i haven't heard an entire album :P

And a lot of people say they're utter shite in the musical department, also they're homophobic closet homos.

*As Davey says, unbelievably serious. And massively up themselves. Will not play a festival if they aren't a headliner, which is why they don't appear at many, charge £300 for meet and greets (taking place in their required own, dedicated merch tent "The Kingdom of Steel: By The Fans, For The Fans", stipulations about the degrees by which any band playing before them must be quieter, come with Must-Be-Booked additional bands. Had a guy booked to do Manowar drum covers for main support in Birmingham not long ago. Bunch of wanks, essentially.

* Depends on the territory, very big in Germany and some other parts of Europe, sell out Academies for one-offs in the UK. Thin they're near nobodies in their native US, might be wrong.

* Yes. Well, a set at Hellfest in France. They played for three hours and it was awful. We watched a handful of tunes out of curiosity and fled to the campsite. Where you could still hear them clearly. Until 4am. Several lengthy tirades about metal during it, with obvious plants from the crowd getting up to worship them. "One Manowarrior is worth a thousand false-metal fans!" and so on.

* Gods no.

Heh, last year, after Metal Camp.. they had their own little festival. 1 day, i think 10 bands. They wanted 60€ for it. Really really shady tactics with ticket sales as well. I doubt a lot of people stuck around for it.
The festival was dubbed 'Magic Circle festival' .. It's sad really.

vintage Manowar.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3J5psthAf8g&feature=related

I remember seeing them on The Power Hour back when I was at school (late 80s) and thought they were rubbish even then.

and it gets worse, this recalls the "my solos are my trademark" scene in Spinal Tap... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BFxgk149xSQ&feature=related

that was a terrible thing to watch. so many other videos that are the same standard as that. utter tripe.
his bass his weird looking too, like it has really light strings that are all really close together, neck looks super skinny too.

They are incredibly serious, and Joey DeMaio, in particular, is a totally humourless, complete and utter tool.

I always got the impression original guitarist Ross the Boss didn't totally buy into the whole image and "mythology" (after all, he was in The Dictators which was a pretty cool band).  The current guy always looks very geeky and vaguely embarrassed to me.

I have sat through at least three whole albums - Battle Hymns, Into Glory Ride and Hail to England - but not since 1984.

(Edit:  Oops.  I've just looked through my old vinyl LPs and I actually have Fighting the World (1987)  )

Every one of us has heard the call
Brothers of true metal proud and standing tall
We know the power within us has brought us to this hall
There's magic in the metal there's magic in us all

Heavy metal or no metal at all whimps and posers leave the hall

Great drunk song

You didn't shell out the £300 to find this out in person did you?

I remember them from back in the 80s, we thought they were very amusing. We even tried to write a few "Manowar" songs but couldn't... we concluded that we were taking it all too seriously... it seems now that mebbe we were wrong and weren't taking it seriously enough... (I had no idea that they weren't tongue in cheek until I read this thread!)

I've always hated this sort of thing, but yeah... For some odd reason germans love this sort of drek.
