The name Erlewine always makes me think of Back To The Future when Marty plugs that little Chiquita in at Doc's house and blows that giant speaker. Don't know if it's the same guy that designed your jig or not though.

The StewMac tools are designed/promoted by Dan Erlewine who used to write the excellent repairs column in Guitar Player.

The Chiquita was designed by Mark Erlewine of Austin, Texas who also makes the Lazer guitar used by Johnny Winter, as well as various custom guitars for ZZ Top and others.  No relation, as far as I know.  :D
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM

Great post!

I'm going to try some of those pots on my strat and tele's, especially the darker sounding ones.

I found this little tutorial on how to build one of those jigs. No gauges on it. Still, it seems good for the at-home guy who's doing this with no thought for profit.

There are 10 kinds of people who understand binary.
Those who do and those who do not.

I think the dials are essential - especially to the way I use the jig

The older version of the Erlewine/Stewmac jig indeed didn't have dials and had more support rods but you had to use the truss rod to get the neck to reseat against the rods fully once the strings were removed.

I prefer the current version which I have had 12 years now (I got mine when I was exhibiting at the Music Live show in Birmingham where StewMac were also exhibiting their wares at the show).
If you are serious about doing fretwork then the Stewmac one is a sensible investment IMO

So what's the exact name of that measurement device? Is it a depth gauge? Just for conversation, of course. I have too many projects right now to even start on a neck jig. Well, I guess I could start, but then it'd lay around for a year.

dial gauge

i dont have the neck jig yet,  but i do have most of the other stew-mac tools and can see why it would be a worthwhile investment.  more for replicability and consistency than anything else
