Epi SG Pickups
« on: June 19, 2011, 06:09:40 PM »
Likely a way off at the moment but, I've been thinking about getting rid of the EMGs from my Epiphone SG Prophecy and trying something a bit different. Looking for a general rocky set for stuff like Hundred Reasons, Coheed and Cambria, Opeth, Rise Against and Muse: something that can get a little aggressive, but nothing really heavy. For cleans, Cynic's Traced in Air is what I'd like.

I know SGs tend to not like medium output pickups, so the vintage hot range probably aren't what I'm after (correct me if I'm wrong please). From looking around the forum, I'm interested in AV Mules, Riff Raffs, Rebel Yells and HBS P90s. Any info on those sets and other suggestions are welcome. I'd rather not go with a Nailbomb or Miracle Men for variety's sake - I've got those in other guitars.

Much appreciated. :)

To be honest I am wondering how much truth is there really to that "no medium output pickups"-recommendation. I'm beginning to think it's not really true.
Current BKPs: Miracle Man, Nailbomb, Juggernaut, VHII
Past BKPS: Holy Diver, Trilogy Suite, Sinner, Black Dog

Riff Raffs do well in SG's.
Mules, VHII, Crawler, MM's, IT's, BG50's.

I would be very tempted to go for a set of Stockholms. I don't know if they're a bit overkill for what you want, but the soundclips just sound so damn nice.

Riff Raffs seem to be a "safe bet" when it comes to SGs and it's often stated that they're more than a one trick pony.
Mississippi Queens, Stormy Monday/Apaches, Emeralds, Nailbomb (bridge)

I thought Stockholms or maybe a humbucker sized Supermassive (if that can be done) as a set or with a Mississippi Queen neck: they sound great in the soundclips. Riff Raffs do seem to be THE SG pickup.

Were'nt the P90's and the HB-versions in the BKP-clips not recorded with an SG?

I remember Nolly posting that - one of the reasons I'm thinking of them.
