When I asked the same question, a friend and musical mentor once told me... "22 frets are for adults.  If 22 frets are enough for EVH, they should be enough for anyone."

don't care :) got guitars with 21, 22, 23 and 24 frets. 21 frets can be awkward for something though.

i've got 24 frets on my 7 and 8 stringers. 22 on my main sixers. i bend the shite out of the 22nd on my sixers and don't go anywhere near the 22nd on my 7-8 strings. tone and comfort is the thing for me!

Never bought a guitar due to how many frets, scalling etc just how it playes sounds so have all different ones. Only thing I don't have are tele's or strats there the only ones I can't get on with, don't know why.

Mabye it's the contour of their neck and the radius of their fingerboard? They're menna be like really round necks with like a 7 1/2" radius. I personally find them a right handful, lol. But even though people said that the rounded neck n radius is only great for chording and a few solos, I don't see Yngwie complaining haha. Just goes to show flat necks aren't always the way forward for some people :P

He played a lot of his stuff on a 21 fret neck too!

21 for me :D

Although my Gibsons have 22 - I had to count them, though! - and I seem to be getting more into them recently.

I have one Guitar with 24. It has a 7.25 radius and a shorter scale-length than the Gibsons. It's the only one I go all the way to the top. All the others I don't play that much above 15 -17 anyway. That's because I personally don't find people playing up at the dusty end that musical, just a personal taste, so I've never felt drawn to learning to use it (in 30-odd years!).

Is that the Brian May guitar?  I didn't realise it was a 7.25" radius.

It is...

And now I'm having doubts as to whether it is 7.25". But I'm fairly certain, I remember being surprised by the radius (pleasantly so, cos I like the Fenders I have with the vintage radius).

However, I can't put down my new 335 long enough to go and dig it out and check

I like both. 22 is the classic number which feels at home. And I agree the neck pickup is in the sweet spot.

24 frets to me has the advantage that it is easier to play in the range of 17-19 and I prefer the sound of the split humbuckers to that of 22 fret guitars. But since I play about 70% bridge the tonal considerations of neck pickups and combinations is not as relevant to me.

Cheers Stephan

i've always liked 24 fret guitars, simply because my first "proper" guitar was one.  the guitars i mostly play at the minute have 22 though.  tonally, if you look at a Gibson SG, it has 22 frets, but the neck pickup is in the same place it would be if it had 24.  it still sounds fine to me :)

True, they might as well just make all SGs 24 frets and be done with it (or at least save 22 for the vintage reissues only).

No no no!! It's that little extra bit of plastic fitted between the neck and the pickup that contributes most to the tone...
