22 Frets vs 24 Frets?
« on: July 29, 2011, 06:01:49 PM »
Basically wondering which you prefer, and why?

AND PLEASE DON'T ANSWER BECAUSE YOU PREFER THE 2 EXTRA NOTES!!! HAHA

I'm looking for more in depth reasons such as sound, etc.

The neck humbucker is in the sweet spot on a 22 fret guitar. On a 24 fret guitar, the same pickup sounds noticeably less sweet to my ears.
Other than that, for certain solos it's damn handy to have those two extra frets :P

I can't get used to the way a 24 fret neck sticks out away from your body, and Sancho's comment about the neck pickup applies to me to.

22 frets all the way for me!

22 allows for more distance between the pickups which gives more tonal variation from bridge to neck pickup, all else being equal

The whole point of having two extra frets is, well, having two extra notes, you know ? Your question is obviously biased if you exclude this as a valid answer, since most of the "anti 24 frets" crowd's argument is about tone...

Why would you need a neck pickup?

24 because it's a nicer number :D

I'm saying it as in does 24 frets have anymore advantages other than having just 2 more notes? If not I'd prob just go for a 22 fret neck.

I like both. for more vintage tones i prefer 22, but for more modern tones i think i prefer 24, the extra brightness helps make the neck pickup cut through higher gain.

Since you don't need a 24 frets neck to place your neck pickup a bit closer to the bridge, the answer is quite obvious.

Well I didn't know until I started this thread, did I? I'd really like the extra 2 frets, but apparantly the 22frets pros/cons outweigh the 24-fret/pros cons.

When you say the sweet spot, do you mean because of where the 24th fret harmonic should be? N how do you mean more sweet exactly? I think I might know what you mean, just making sure.

It's not that hard to figure out, is that ?-)

As as explained (with some verbosity) in my answer to your "SC vs HBs" thread, you do have a problem with how to ask questions - ask yourself why you get sarcastic answers ? - , and, may I say, possibly not enough experience to know what to do of the answers.

wrt/ "tone" problems, there are no practical evidence that the two frets difference will make the guitar sound "better" or "worse" - first because I have yet to meet someone who tried the exact same guitar with a 22 frets neck then with a 24 one, and then it's a matter of taste and whatnot.

FWIW, replacing the stock X2Ns with a Crawler set on my 24 frets Vox certainly made a way greater difference than moving the stock neck pickup a couple centimers away from the bridge.

Agreed.

Yep, especially true on PRS guitars where you can have pretty much the same model with either 22 or 24 frets.  I like the way the 22 fret neck feels shorter because the bridge is further down the body.
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM
