i think i have 6100 on a couple of guitars

it's very, very big

apologies if you're asking for our opinions and already know about this link, but there's some good info about fret sizes here on warmoth:

I've had 6105s on a few guitars and, to my surprise, I got on with them pretty well!
I think I hate being indecisive.

I love 6000 on a Strat, it allows a little flatter/compound radius-ing if the luthier is good enough at fret dressing - Feline is.

I didn't think there was a massive difference between 6100 and 6000?  They're both very tall, wide jumbo frets aren't they?
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM

Most of my own personal guitars are fretted with Dunlop 6000 and they are awesome

The trick with huge frets is to make sure the ends of the frets are neatly dressed and smoothed so they dont snag your hands.

AndyR had me do his tele and it turned out really nice too.....he decided to go that way after playing our Emerald Lion which had Dunlop 6000

I was reading down through the thread thinking "now, what is it I have on my tele?" - I'm useless at remembering the numbers

After I'd asked for them that big, I had moments of panic when I was on the way to pick it up. No worries at all though, feels very natural to me.

I think it's quite personal to individuals, but this is how it's worked out for me: I'm quite aggressive with my fingering, but I don't get any problem with pushing notes out of tune in chords. And I can still sense the board underneath when I'm bending (I tend to feel a bit insecure if I can't). Sometimes it even encourages me to play with a softer touch (which is no bad thing) because I seem to get more value from my vibrato/wotever for less effort.

I've got a strat (7.25 radius, skinny frets) that I'm planning on getting changed. The 6000s are definitely an option, but I'm also interested in the frets that are on my Roadworn strats - they seem to be a nice halfway house for me (no idea what they are, though!).

I think I'm leaning away from the 6000s on my strat because of the radius. My tele is slightly flatter (9.5) and I've just got this gut feeling that 6000 and 9.5 is nice for me, but 6000 and 7.25 might be not quite there. There is always the option of reprofiling the board a bit, but I kinda like it as it is ... it's basically why I haven't had it done yet - it's not actually broken, and I can't make my mind up what I actually want!

Yes
6100 is 55 thou tall and 110 thou wide
6000 is 58 thou tall and 116 thou wide

So it's about 5% bigger

thanks guys you are beening very helpful.

im just worried that the 6000's is gonna be super huage! but im really tempted to go for them!

but im also hoping that if i did go for 6000s that it would beef up the feel of my neck,
my usa 62ri has a very thin neck for me.

did any of yous find a thicking of the neck? + did any one find the bigger wire slowed them down at all?

thanks chris.

That's interesting, I've never actually handled a USA 62ri - but I've always kind of expected it to have a nice meaty-ish neck (like my 60s Roadworn, and my CIJ "62").

The tele that I put 6000s on is a Baja. So, it's got quite a chunky neck already. The reason I went for a refret was the stock frets (not skinny themselves) seemed rather soft - I was eating into them after a few months. I was wondering about the cost effectiveness of fret-dressing every 6-12 months or refretting now with "better" wire. Jonathan helped me convince myself, and he was right - the frets are showing signs of light wear now, but it's a couple of years on, not a couple of months!

When it came to "what frets do you want?" I was a bit unsure. A lot of my heroes (eg Rory Gallagher, SRV) used jumbo frets, and I'd recently read how one of the old blues guys that used a tele said "yeah biggest ones I can find, I eats frets...". When I mumbled that, Jonathan chucked the Emerald Lion at me as an example of "that's the biggest..."

I think he was a bit surprised when after a minute or so I went "yeah, that's fab...".

After I'd had it done, I don't think it gave me an impression of thickening the neck. But it does feel different - kind of more solid and robust, more ready to take my slightly aggressive approach to playing the thing. It also felt a lot more reliable and accurate - but that's probably the superb dressing that went with the refret

It definitely didn't slow me down. If anything, I feel more confident playing it than I did in its original state, so it might even have speeded me up on that guitar.

What's on your 62ri at the moment? One of the reasons I want to do my CIJ 62 (and a MIJ 60s custom tele with rosewood board) is that with the "vintage" frets I can feel just a little bit too much board in comparison to my other guitars (Roadworn strats with "medium jumbo", the Baja with the 6000s, and various Gibsons). I'm actually OK with the skinny frets, but I have to get used to them after playing the other guitars, so I tend to play the others more at the moment.

Actually, mentioning the Gibsons. One of them is an Explorer, that seems to have "tall" frets rather than fat frets like the others - I find that quite a pleasant "stratty" experience. It might be worth investigating "taller" rather than generally "bigger" frets if you're worried about "speed bumps"?

My gut feeling, though, is that you sound like I felt when I chose the 6000s... (and it still might be what I go for on my CIJ strat) ... "hell yeah, let's do it, biggest, fattest I can get"

If that is the way you're thinking/feeling, then, as long as the tech who installs them does a nice job on the dressing and the fret ends, I don't think you'll be disappointed. You'll still be wondering after you've done it, but then you'll notice you're playing the thing anyway and feeling rather happy about it all... :D

Now I think of it, I'm not sure if my legra has 6000 or 6100. But whatever it has, they're big
