HBSP90 on SG
« on: August 28, 2011, 03:12:00 PM »
Hello guys,

Lately I've toying with the idea of going away from the standard humbucker sound on my SG. I already tried half a dozen humbuckers on it an none of them satisfied completely (498T, Dimarzio SD, SD C5 and C8, Rebel Yell). On all of them, I miss some openness and find all of them kinda honky on the midrange, specially for recording purposes. The Rebel Yell is the one I like the most, but it kinda amplifies think honk, it being the only aspect I dislike on this pickup. Btw, I use this guitar mostly for recording purposes and most stuff I record is rock, heavy rock and pop with mild rock influences.

So, I need something that can get away (or not amplify) with this honkyness, while mantaining clarity, openness..you get the  idea. What do you think of BK's HSP90 ? I listened to sound clips of the Stockholm pickup, loved it, but the EQ chart scared me a little bit, as I want to un-muddy this guitar a little bit and it has plenty of lows. The MQ also looks great but I am fearful it will be a bit too vintage for more modern stuff (think Alice in Chains, Foo Fighters, for example).

What do you guys think? Btw, I am more of a rhythm player, so that's what I need this guitar mainly for.

Thanks
Ivan

Pickups with moderate output work often quite well in SG's. I think the guitar will breeze the best trough MQ's, bec not too middy, and despite the dc-resistance they have enough oomph.
Mules, VHII, Crawler, MM's, IT's, BG50's.

I love the MQ neck pickup in my SG. Haven't found a bridge pickup that works well in the SG but I haven't tried a MQ bridge yet. What I have tried is a Pig 90 and it's just far too hot for this guitar, it sounds worse than the stock Gibson bridge pickup. I tried my Mule in there briefly and it sounded great. From my limited experience SGs prefer low output pickups. I'm just trying to decide whether I should go for a Riff Raff or MQ bridge in mine :D

Other pickups I've tried in the guitar have been the SD Custom Custom and the stock Gibson 498t which I don't actually think sounds too bad, just again too hot for the SG.

My biggest fear with the MQ is that there's no higher gain clips, just that classic rock one. I just love how bout the supermassive and the stockholm sounded on BKP website, but I am really afraid it does not match well with the guitar.

I hope other (SG-)users can chime in, by ex. Nolly. You can also mail the BKP-team for a recommendation.

Can't comment on HSP90 as I never tried them, but GS/P90 is a well known working combo. But you should possibly consider RiffRaff too, the bridge is very clear, bright, open sounding and doesn't mud up with higher gain.

My 2 cents...
Have: Crawlers, BGF 50/52s, Mules, ABomb, RiffRaff
Had : Slowhands (n&m), Trilogy (b)

RiffRaffs and SG's are usually a happy marriage.

I have a MQ set in my SG Standard too, and I don't plan on touching that guitar soon. Those are the best pickups for a SG so far I've tried.
