Neck single-coil sized pickup to go with Miracle Man?
« on: September 11, 2011, 10:14:38 AM »
So I now have a Miracle Man coming my way again to replace the Holy Diver in my baritone for a more old-fashioned and chunkier metal tone. The guitar has a neck single-coil sized neck humbucker which is fashioned after the Seymour Duncan hotrail (it's the Duncan Designed version). I'd like something with more clarity there. In general a clear humbucker sound or a clear and round single-coil sound would both be fine. I'm not after "twangy" sounds, as I like the almost piano-esque sound of the baritone on the low strings, clean, just a very full and big bell like sound (this, I believe, is part due to the scale, the 22 fret position and the big strings as well).

Unfortunately BKP doesn't make a hum-canceling single coil, so I need to go to other pickup makers. Because the guitar has the George Lynch style push-pull pot as only control, there is no possibility of in-between sounds that could be noise-cancelling. Haeussel is a bit expensive, so Seymour Duncan and DiMarzio are looking like my choices. I haven't tried a single one of their pickups in that format and am virtually without any experience.

From the websites I gather options would be

SD Cool Rails
SD Lil 59 (string pull of the pole pieces and the fact that installation on my guitar is slanted worries me)
(both SDs have got some not so great reviews, however)

DM Pro Track (sounds very promising, has got better reviews than the Lil 59)
DM Fast Track 1 (used by Neal schon a lot, whose tone I always liked)
DM Chopper (louder, maybe better for a baritone)

I'm less interested in the Air Norton S, because of its rather hefty output and it seems to be darker as well.

As said the bridge will be a Miracle Man. Guitar is 27" scale, maple neck with rosewood fretboard, mahagony body, set neck.
Current BKPs: Miracle Man, Nailbomb, Juggernaut, VHII

I have a Miracle Man in the bridge of my BC Rich Gunslinger and have it paired with a Trilogy Suite in the neck.

It's not noiseless, but it's also not twangy. I find it to be very smooth sounding and a perfect fit for the MM bridge.

I have experience with a few of the pickups you mentioned, but not entirely sure I should be talking about them on here out of respect for BKPs products.

Feel free to PM/Email me and I can give you my experiences with the other pickups you mentioned. Thing is, they all got sold and replaced with BKPs so that may give you an indication

If it is between SD and DM I almost always had better experiences with DM. Unfortunately I have not played any of the pickups you listed. I once had a blade pickup from Haeussel but that was about 7-8 years ago - I thought he still had to do a lot of development there ...

The Wilde by Lawrence pickups are not bad but the single coil sized ones would be too low in output to keep up with the Miracle Man. I did not like the Kinmans at all. I would check out Tom Anderson - he has noiseless ones, too. They don't really sound like strat pickups but I understood that's not what you're after.

Cheers Stephan

Trilogy for sure.

I'm sure it sounds great, but it is not hum-canceling. Hum drives me craaaaazzzyyyyy, sadly.

I've got a Fast Track coming my way now :-) Can't wait to test the new combo. I hope the MM will have more bottom end definition and cut over the HD and the Fast Track more clarity over the Duncan Design one.

I've had 4 different sets of BKP single coils and have never had any issues with hum. Sure they hum a little with high gain when you don't play, but it's nothing serious and is easilly sorted out.

I've tried several of the Duncan single coil stacks, aswell as the Dimarzion Fast Track, and have never been overly fussed by any of them tbh. Each to their own as they say  :D

Unfortunately for authentic single coil tone you need to live with hum, I would have got a blackmore quarterpounder (in my blackmore strat sounds great) or the new duncan yjm fury. For hum cancelling I've always loved Chris Amott's lead tone in arch enemy, he uses his SD hot rail in the neck.

Like Alex, I can't live with the hum.
I've had very good results with Dimarzio's Era and Virtual Vintage series of noiseless pickups. The Duncan Cool Rail is another good pickup, but I have to admit that doesn't sound much like a real single coil.

Then again, I'm very much a humbucker guy and the nuances of different kinds of single coils escape me, by and large. I barely use them anyway...
