Laptop speaker recommendations?
« on: September 18, 2011, 12:03:30 AM »
I need some speakers for my laptop - general use, mainly listening to CDs/MP3s, internet radio etc.  Music stuff, I'm not a gamer.

Any recommendations for a compact setup that'll sound good filling a living room?

Focal CMS 40's will fill a small room from a laptop.

a friend of mine has some edirol powered monitors that she uses, small a pretty cheap. struck me that i'd probably be happy with them or something similar too. i haven't done an A-B comparison of all thats out there, but they definitely pissed all over the old 'multimedia' speakers i used to use. probably i'd try a few out, theres a few out there in the sub 150 or even sub 80 quid range.

edit: was MA-15D that she had - you could have a small party with them.

The Focals look they'd be great, but a bit pricey for my tastes in computing equipment!

The Edirols could be the ticket, I'll check them out...

Don't know what you're budget is but maybe Genelec 6010a set.

Seems a bit odd to me to spend all that money on expensive guitar gear and have a cheap set of speakers to play music on.

I like nice gear to make my tone, other peoples I'm not too bothered about as long as I can hear it OK!

I'll check out the recommendation, thanks...

They sound prety good, but you definately need the sub.
Advice worth what you just paid for it.

We have Edirols (MA-10 I think), they're on the missus's PC now.

I got them as an initial "stop-gap" solution for home-recording monitoring several years ago. They won't cut it for that job , but I have happily used them as the amplifier/speakers for a living room POD XT guitar rig. In fact, they were even our living room "hifi" speakers for a while (all audio in our living room goes through my mixing desk!).

I did that (guitar "amp") for a few months with no worries. They won't handle sh1tloads of bottom-end at too high a volume (but I was usually reaching "neighbour worrying volume" by then anyway - loads louder than I'd listen to other people's music).

For PC speakers they do a fine job. We're definitely not talking audiophile territory, but they get the job done without you thinking "my speakers is sh1t"...

The missus listens to most of her music on these while she's writing. (And I use her PC and these speakers if I want to do any web listening/viewing). From our experience, I think the 15s would be fine for what you want. But, like gwem says, try a few out in that price range, I wouldn't be at all surprised if you could better them for the same sort of money.

Its not computing equipment, its musical equipment!

I havent used focals myself, but have heard nothing but superb reports of them. Out of my own experience: adam A5s or A3Xs.

I like my Mackie MR5s which get far more use as music-listening speakers than actual monitors  They do take up quite a bit of space though, and are about £250 a pair + you need auralex mopads to get the best out of them.

To be honest for a compact and cheap setup I think Logitech sound fine if you're not arsed about audiophile bollox :P

monitors are always a matter of taste. Personally I love my KRK V6s, so I'd get a pair of these at 149EUR a piece: http://www.thomann.de/de/krk_rp5_g2_rokit.htm
