pickup for LP RI 58
« on: September 18, 2011, 11:04:31 AM »
Hi to all...Iīve got new axe itīs a custom build replica of Gibson standard 1958...It has same specs as original as one piece of honduran mahogany body and neck, brasilian rosewood,AAAA flamed maple top...I was thinking long time about pickups but finaly I decided to put there gibson 498T/490R combo...I liked these pickups in my SG standard and in my previously owned 96 Custom but this guitar is completly different...Sound of wood and his natural resonance makes overall sound bit muddy and not as tight as it could be..Iīd like to keep there typical Gibsonish dirt and crispness but with some modern vibe...I tune it to drop C#.. I donīt use clean channel often but it should be able to handle it....So Iīm looking for versatile bridge pickup to use it for eperimental hard core stuff when is dirty crunch needed but also for  way oldschoolish heavy thrash/death stuff when some clarity and tightness is necessary....

have CWP,MM...had AM,CS,VHII,NB,PK,HD...

The Holy Diver can be excellent in a Les Paul, but typically best suited to brighter examples. If muddiness is a worry for you I would urge you to stick to the Cold Sweat :)

I went with a set of Nailbombs over Cold Sweats for my Les Paul. Quite pleased with the results.

Nailbomb was first pickup what I ordered from BKP...I was disapointed with sound so I swapped it for Miracle Man...Of course it was other story with different guitar but also it didn´t fit with my Krank head....Maybe ceramic NB would do job better...

Another pickup in my list is Rebel Yell...It looks so similar to 498T specs...Anyone have it in Les Paul?

The Alnico Nailbomb seems to be really both a "hit or miss" AND "love or hate" kind of pup...
Have: Crawlers, BGF 50/52s, Mules, ABomb, RiffRaff
Had : Slowhands (n&m), Trilogy (b)

The RY has tons of mids, but quite some treble too. Listen to the Steve Stevens-clips to get a hint.

Propably it is..Maybe I should take more time with looking for compromises but on first impression I expected more...

The RY sounds very different from the 498T - much brighter and much tighter in the bass.
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM

If you have to "look for compromises" then it's (probably) not the right pup for you / your guitar / your rig, and was not trying to say you should try it again. What I meant is: for some people/guitars/rig it seems to work JustFine(tm), but when it fails it _really_ fails.
