Oh my, what have I started?
« on: September 28, 2011, 11:02:09 PM »
OK - a little while back I bought a rack mounted MIDI switching system for my stomp boxes and Bogner XTC, which allows me to change channels and bring in stomps in any combination.  Great, super flexible and a more versatile version of the rig I already had.  Top stuff.

Then Mr Juan Solo of our very own parish offers up for sale a TC Electronics G-Sharp rack effects unit, which I thought would be a nice addition to the rig.  This way I can have multiple presets of reverb/delay/chorus to exactly match the channels I'm using.  Very reasonably priced and a bit of fun I thought?

I've now spent the entire evening, after an early dart from work, setting up my XTC switching rig with the G-Sharp and teasing out some truly great sounds - better than the individual stomps in my case as the FX loop on the Bogner is line level and better suited to the G-Sharp rack effects.  SO the stomps are out and the G-Sharp is in.  Nice and tidy.

I now have a irresistible urge to scour the known land for a second rack mounted multi effects unit and a power condition to fill up my 4U rack box.

Arrgghh!!!!!  When will it ever stop?????

I have a great British made rack power distribution unit with filtering and a light at the front that will be in seconds out in the next few days
It was a British attempt to do a Furman - made by a company called Nomad - Unit name light 19
It's really good but I ended up with too many of them _ had more racks than I knew what to do with but have just the 3 now

Listen mate, just approach your playing in the same vein you approach your gear quest. Playing is everything, gear is nothing.

I've used a MIDI rack system for years, originally it was to dial in the right tempo-matched delays on a Quadraverb ... I don't really use that much now and I'm kind of back to switching between 4 or 5 standard guitar tones again.

Damn that is very true indeed. We're all suffering from wrong priorities. At the moment I'm preparing for a gig next week and have no amp during the week, so I play daily with just the guitar not plugged in. Interesting experience...

Lol.

Buy my g-sharp then you can run delays and modulation effects at the same time.

Gear isn't nothing to me - it's a large part of the fun!  I want a great tone and a laugh with the folks in the band.  I can play well enough for a pub gig, and really enjoy the band I'm in, so that'll do nicely for me  :)  I'm not trying to be Steve Vai and music is just a hobby.

We play quite a variety of stuff, and I like to get the tones right, so MIDI switching is working out really well.  I never thought I'd use it, but there you go!  It's a nice change from the "guitar into amp" rig that I've been using for 5.5 years in YC/DC?.

marauder - I have thought about grabbing your G-Sharp too, but I think I'll grab something different.  Not decided what yet though!

Sounds like you're now running a very similar style rig to me Dave.

I have a 4u case with a Samson (I think) Power Conditioner/Distributer with rack light and a TC Electronics G-Major in. I have a small MIDI controller that that goes into a Voodoo Labs Switcher which changes channels/modes/'gears' on my amp via normal 1/4" cables and a MIDI out which controls the G-Major.

It works well with my amp, sounds good and is pretty easy to setup. Plus, they're relatively cheap nowadays since the G-Force and G-Major 2 have come out.

The Rocktron stuff (Intelliflex comes to mind) may also be worth checking out.

I've an older Intellifex LTD you can borrow to try out if you want Dave. Give me a buzz if you're like to try it and I'll drop it around and gawp at your current gear! ;)

Suppose to a cheaper axe-fx in the works that doesn't do amps, just effects ;)
