How do you become a guitar luthier?
« on: September 29, 2011, 05:31:53 PM »
I was actually really curious as to how the guitar luthiers on here came to do what they do, and how they were trained, etc. Also what would one need to do to get into that field? I've just inboxed this message to Feline, but I thought whilst I'm asking, why not post it on the Forum where I may get a wider range of responses :)

Also what's the yearly income like? (Don't worry I'm not asking how much, just whether its just a living, good money, or fantastic money).

It's something I'd really be interested in, but I want to make sure it's something that worth persuing as a career, rather than a hobby.

The wages can be pretty/extremely poor to be fair (especially when you consider the levels of skill or expertise involved).

If you have very low or almost zero overheads maybe it can seem ok , but if your operation is in the heart of a town centre with highish rents and business rates etc and making a decent profit is tricky.

Maybe because I have staff to pay as well I sometimes feel like I am last in line when it comes to getting paid (the nature of running a business)

Thankfully as my hobbies are guitars, tools and photography so I feel like I am pursuing my own interests and can justify many purchases via the business, but it does mean that I sometimes miss out on what others take for granted -  like being able to randomly go out with mates to the pub, being able to go on holiday , afford to go to a gig or festival without maybe being on the guest-list or crew, own a car, go out for a meal without having to plan the event carefully.

I do get to play lots of nice guitars though and I  absolutely love the work and can't imagine doing anything else!

That is really not good to read... This mean that working there as luthier is at less as bad as working here... I don't work as and am not a luthier, but I'm interest in guitar building and have friendship with luthier here...

Was planning doint Totnes G.M. course, but will have to think about...

The two luthiers I have known personally were/are not rich even though they had done work for Santana, ZZ Top and other big names. I'm not sure it's a course you take if you are concerned about playing the money game. You would have to know the difference between worth and wealth before making that decision. Still, nothing wrong with refining your skills as a hobby during your working years and running a small home-based business during retirement.

thats always what I had in mind for my amps, but its grown beyond my expectations without much more than word of mouth.

Yes - good points

I know the value and worth of my work and feel good about my job no matter what
Sometimes there are more financial hurdles than you'd expect which are the only headache.

Your business can thrive if you have both the expertise and good way with looking after people

I'm still only getting a few amps or pedals a month to repair and I've been doing it for years.  :( Never had an issue with anyone. I guess that's just how it goes. I do move around a lot. Might have something to do with it. I can say that I started with building pedals in my teens and that has lead to the pursuit of an EE degree and my current(maybe forever) career in solar powered hydroponic greenhouse automation. Orchids, not cannabis.  :P

I say give whatever interests you most a shot and, if it doesn't feed you, use those skills elsewhere. You'll probably be just as happy even without the romance associated with this exact hobby. There's tons of ways, besides guitar building, to use the majority of the tools and the mindset you'd need to be a luthier. You might end up being an amazing and respected cabinet or furniture maker who builds guitars in his spare time.

I'm not a luthier, but am self-employed working in a similar area (amps!).

Some random observations:

1) All the luthiers I know enjoy what they do, and like "not working for the man". I don't know any who are making vast sums of money, which would suggest it's quite a competitive market.

2) Whilst becoming self employed has it advantages, you need to do your maths right, ie you need to work out how much you will need to charge to make a living.

3) You need to decide what you want to aspire to: do you want to work on guitars as a hobby, as a second source of income, or as a full-time job?

I started out fixing/ building amps as a hobby, which then became a part time business interest, and finally my full-time job. Thus I was able to build up a customer base and business reputation before relying on the business as my sole source of income.

4) Many of the luthiers I know have had some form of formal training, eg Leeds College of music etc, and all seem to have worked for/with other luthiers to gain experience before becoming self-employed. A sensible course of action would be to do a luthiery course and decide if you like the work. If you show an aptitude for it then, then you might consider trying to get a job with a reputable luthier to gain experience. This will probably be poorly paid, but in my view good experience is invaluable.

Good luck!

What do people think of these courses if you're doing it as a hobby --> http://www.baileyguitars.co.uk/courses/

It's something I intend to get into at some stage, but certainly not to make money.

I''ll get some nice reclaimed bits of wood and decent tools and get making Lap steels and Telecasters.

Would be nice to make enough to pay for the tools but that would be a bonus.  I already have a (very) small workshop, and I'll stick to oil or wipe on finishes to keep things easier.

In fact don't tell the missus but I already have the pine table that my laptop is sitting on earmarked for a Telecaster project.

Sorry, no help whatsoever with the original question!

I'm in the same boat as you Tom. The only thing stopping me is having 4 kids!

Also no help from me with the original question!
I think I hate being indecisive.

The Bailey course and the Totnes one both seem good - looks like you get nice guitars as a finished project.

As for a career?  I don't think that people go into high end crafts to make bucket loads of cash - making a living out of something that you love is a fantastic thing to aim for but I suspect that you're unlikely to be rich, unless you're Paul Reed Smith.  And even then, his business model is based purely on Twinfan remaining in employment...

As soon as I win the lottery tonight, I'm booking myself on one of the above courses.  Or offering my services to Jonathan as a 40 year old tea-boy/Henry operator...
