What pedal set up ?
« on: January 23, 2006, 01:57:41 PM »
I'm in a bit of a dilema about what pedal set up to use :

I thinking of experimenting with delay, chorus and flange effects to fill out a few ballady/epic chorus type strumming tunes songs that i play and I think that these effects will compliment my songs nicely and help fill them out as my band has just one guitar, I tend to use lots of open chords/open string drones (think Nick Harper).

Apart from delay, chorus and flange I don't have any immediate need for any distortion/overdrive pedals as I'm quite happy with the combination of my strat armed with Irish tours and my amp for rockier tones.

I want to keep my pedal set up to a minimum and the only other pedal i use is a wah.

I was thinking of getting a Marshall regenerator which does flange and chorus and then the Boss DD3 for delay, does this sound like a decent set up or should i go for a seperate flange, and chorus too.  I went for the Marshall regenrator as it cuts down on clutter and cheaper than buying seperate pedals.

Any help/advice gladly appreciated.

Those Yamaha Magic Stomps sounded pretty good for reverbs, delays and chorus effects.

OR, the Visual Sound H20 is a good one, lush chorus and nice warm delay all in one.

cheaper doesn't mean better though. I'd check out the EH Small Clone if I were you. They aren't expensive and they have a nice sound.  My chorus is based upon the Small Clone, but with some nice tweaks (it's an Analogman chorus).

speaking of Analogman he does a version of the Boss DD3 which is supposed to be much better than the original (similar to what Keeley does). Some people like the Line6 Delay as it has the tap-tempo feature which I don't think the Boss pedal has.  i know you indicated that size is a facture but the EH Memory Man is a nice pedal - its a shame that it is so big though.

Sorry to keep mentioning Electro Harmonix, but they also make the very nice Electric Mistress pedal. Again this pedal is rather large by modern standards.

I'm anonther EH Small Clone user, and I think it's one of the better "lusher" sounding chorus's out there. There again, lots of people will disagree...

Don't know about delay's... The EH Memory Man is supposed to be good, as is the Ibanez AD-9 (bit of an analogue fan, sorry...).

I'm pretty sure the Memory Man is an analogue delay, because they used the bucket brigade chips that were made by Panasonic. Their reverb pedals are definitely digital though.

You can pickup a Boss CH-1 fairly cheap nowadays.Maybe try one of these first. As for the delay, get one but be prepared to spend a while learning how to get the best out of it.

Chorus and Flange effects are essentially variations of the same thing. Modulation.

Set a Chorus pedal to a very slow rate and long depth and you'd be supprised at the result. Its very close to a flanger.

Conversly set a Flanger to a fast rate and shallow depth and you get somewhat eighties kind of chorus sound.

Same as Delay. set to a moderate delay time with no feedback and you get a spacious kind of reverb effect.

They are all variations of the their same groupings. Get it.

my vote: a DD-3 and a CH-1
Mule, Irish Tour and Slowhands

Cheers for the advice fellas, its very helpful.

I just looked on ebay and there's plenty of eh pedals going at reasonable prices, I always assumed they were quite expensive but there the same price range as Boss, if not a tad cheaper.

I had noticed after comparing pedals via guitar mag gear review cds, and various recordings that the flange and chorus effects can sound very similer.

So if i was to stick to just 2 pedals: Delay and chorus or Delay and flange which would be the most versatile combination ?  A flange to cover both bases or a Chorus ?

I haven't used either pedals before at length, i guess I should go to a shop and try them all out to get a feel for them but I'm sure there's plenty of well seasoned players on this forum who can give me the benefit of their experience.

I'd buy three separate pedals if I were you, that way you can set the dial positions and leave them alone. The Japanese Boss pedals are considered the best, as they still used quality parts. Obviously they are a little more expensive but they keep their value well if you come to sell them. When production was moved to Taiwan the company started cost-cutting (some very early Taiwanese pedals are still as good as the Japanese ones).

Depending on your budget, a Line6 MM4 Modulation Modeller may be an option.

It's chock full of modulation FX, and difrferent sounding versions of each. It doesn't do Delay, but the Choruses, Flanges, Phasers etc all sound great :)

They're expensive, but if you plan on using different modulation FX, I think they're worth the money
Selling lots of gear, enquire within!......
