The DAR FBM100H looks pretty tasty, is right there near your price point and sounds great in clips at least. I'd like to see what's under the hood myself. Fredrik Thordendal(Meshuggah) sig model.  :)

I like a punchy, sharp tone.
I like 5150's, blackmoores and jcm 800's

VHT/Fryette pittbull 100CL or ultra lead. you can fiend em used for $1200-$1700 US
Ampeg VL1002 designed be Lee Jackson, basically a JCM get one used for 400-600 bucks. Destroys most amps 3 times that price
Rivera Knucklehead Tre or II

I'm pretty sure the Avenger will do better should it come down to resale, but a 5150 is just one of those amps that slays and I'm getting the feeling you have a romantic relationship with the idea of obtaining one(because you mention 5150s a lot ). I'd have to say the Avenger will have less noise/hiss. Peavey really doesn't do much for a 5150 in that department even though it would be cheap. I guess that's why it is and has been a very popular mod platform. Lot's of little bits to make better/different or play with.

This is the only item on my GAS list.

I have a 5150-II, which is awesome, though! :)

Some gothic bands play the Laboga Hector (from Poland, but made well).
Mules, VHII, Crawler, MM's, IT's, BG50's.
