Guitar suggestions - is there anything I should try next?
« on: October 10, 2011, 03:55:51 PM »
As most of the old guard here on the forum will know, I've owned a fair few guitars over the years.  I think I've owned around 60 guitars of most types, and I pretty much know what I do and don't like.

I have two gigs next week which are my final 'DC tribute gigs, so I'm thinking of selling my UK built SG (Paul Richardson SGR) afterwards as I'll no longer need an SG.  Is there something else I could replace it with?  Once my PRS Private Stock arrives in a couple of weeks I'll have at my disposal:

Live guitars to use with my covers band through my Bogner XTC Classic
* PRS PS Signature Ltd
* Fender CS Top Bound Esquire Relic

Others
* PRS Modern Eagle
* Fender CS '58 Heavy Relic Tele
* Squier JV Strat

I'm thinking something else that I could use live would be good.  I play almost exclusively with gain, from crunch (AC/DC) to singing lead (Gary Moore), so the guitar has to work with that setup.  A few basic requirements are:

* Preferably a doublecut model
* Preferably a nitro finish
* No Les Pauls
* Maybe a trem of some sort, but not a Floyd
* Something conventional but a bit "different", not wacky or pointy (e.g. Fano good, Dean bad)
* P90s or humbuckers

A few things I've thought about/you've come up with so far are:

* Early PRS Custom 24 with a sweet switch (always fancied trying one) - discarded due to poly finish
* Gibson ES-335 or similar, with or without a Bigsby (quite fancy a Bigsby)
* Gibson CS LP Junior
* Gretsch Billy-Bo - discarded due to poly finish
* Gibson ES-339
* PRS DGT (early model with full nitro finish, Goldtop with birds?)
* Hamer Special

Anything else anyone can suggest?  Budget is around £2k I guess, but could be stretched if required....

Hmmm, something Gretsch-y is a possible I guess.  I'm not overly keen on the massive hollow body models as I find them awkward to play though?

I was also going to mention something Gretsch like but then thought that the body on their semi models are quite big. This is pretty much why I got rid of my 335 although I didn't really give it enough time. The adjustment going from a tele at the time (I think) was quite big and I never really got used to it.

Perhaps a 335 could be a go-er, not quite as blingy as a Gretsch either.

I think I hate being indecisive.

Motorbike  :lol:

How about a Les Paul Junior?
Advice worth what you just paid for it.

Gretsch Duo-Jet/Power-Jet perhaps?

Gretsch Billy-Bo?

Epiphone Wilshire (either vintage, Gibson CS or the regular new cheapie)?

Gibson Firebird?

Wanna buy my ES-339?  I could sell you a Bigsby B5 and a Vibramate, too....  :wink:

Cheers for the suggestions guys!

LP Junior - A definite possibility, I'll update my first post.
Duo-Jet - not sure the pickups would do the "singing lead" tone I like
Billy-Bo - nearly bought one once, will add to the list.
Wilshire - not really my thing, looks a bit awkward to my eyes
Firebird - have a reputation as neck heavy monsters?

Philly - a 339 might be cool, another for the list!

Matt - thanks for the mental health advice  ;)  The only Trussarts I like the look of are singlecuts, so they're out?

Indeed it will, maybe I won't need anything else...

Trussarts are cool, but singlecuts and me don't get on  :(

The Duesy's are nice but I always ffel they're a bit overpriced.  Maybe I just haven't played a great one yet?

Collings guitars look bloody awesome.  I love the way they're like super-refined versions of well known Gibson designs.

Nik Hubers ain't bad either.  :)
