Anyone know any Custom Amp Builders?
« on: October 16, 2011, 03:38:50 PM »
I got a call yesterday asking if I would like to work in a different department, for more money; so I thought: "Hey, I'm gonna treat myself to a top quality Amp" :)

So if anyone knows of any amp builders that can make great sounding, versatile, metal amps, could you please let me know.

Also how much would i be looking at?

Cheers

Id say around £1k+ minimum but that is absolutely scr@ping the bottom your most likely looking at around £1300+ with most builders

And there are plenty on here HTH posted a few videos of one of his newer amps recently

Jesus Christ! I just wondered btw, rather than having a 3 channel clean/crunch/lead type amp, is it possible to have something like a 3 channel with 1 Clean and 2 Lead channels. Kind of like a Lead channel to give me that Peavey 6505 tone, and another Lean Channel which would be based more around my Solo style playing, where I play instrumental music?

if you go custom then yes. but be prepared to pay. if you want a 6505 tone it may be better to still get a 6505

Well I'm getting myself a Jet City for a nice versatile amp, and was going to get a Peavey 6505 for metal. But now I'm wondering whether to just get a Marshall JVM since I've heard it's really versatile amp with great metal tones. The idea of a custom made amp is more just enquiring about it, weighing up my options. Has anyone had experiendce with the JVM?

yeah, I have a JVM, among other things. What you wanna know?

Edit - fwiw from my brief play of the MJW electra, I thought it was nearly there. In all fairness the lions share of my objections could easily have been down to the cab and speaker.

I just want to know how it is for metal since it uses EL34s? I know for a fact it will be great for all the other styles I play.

Its the best marshall metal amp I've used. EL34s shouldnt put you off for metal at all, there are many great EL34 metal amps out there.

The only thing about the marshall is it doesnt like to be quiet, and its quite noisy. But if we're talking a band setting here, channels 3 and 4 each on orange or red are all (4 options there, obivously) capable of various degrees of metal.

it goes up to pretty severely hotrodded JCM800 territory on its most metal settings.

thanks for the plug guys.

for the more metal end of things, this is what I've been working on, but it could be made more metal if you wanted.  I tend to try and retain that grind in the mids and not have the tone become too saturated and fizzy.

here are a couple of clips...
