$1000 Pickups
« on: October 26, 2011, 03:59:02 AM »
Seymour Duncan is trying to sell $1000 pickups. Want to know what makes them $1000? They use pure silver wire!  PDT_038

I've just ordered a set.

Because I'm stupid and I think that expensive gear makes me play better.

Well that is some of the most egregiously horrid advertising copy I've ever read and, oddly, didn't persuade me to drop a grand on a set of pickups.

Er... we're going to hold you to that statement Dave

Not saying you will, mind, just logging the fact you made it... just in case

Seriously, though... sounds intriguing... but I'm filled with doubt and thoughts of "snake oil". But surely I can't be the only one on here who is vaguely interested in knowing whether any of these claims are actually true? For a grand though, sorry lads, think again...

I'll wait until someone/anyone we know bites the bullet and gives them a go. And even then I'm not convinced that they would be worth (to me) whatever improvement becomes apparent...

Thing is that this was discussed massively on TGP some time ago and still nobody's heard them, no demo's. If they were so amazing and revolutionary you'd have thought SD would have been champing at the bit to show the world. Also silver isn't that expensive anyway.

Guitarists hate new stuff, look how well the Robot guitars are doing

No-one wants something that isn't the same as the old stuff!

as a part time silversmith (not a very good one i might add)  i can tell you that the price of silver has more than doubled in the last year or so.  i think copper's gone up by even more

so basically, get these while they're cheap! ;)

Even if it has doubled what would you estimate the amount of silver in a couple of HB's to be worth? I can't believe that it's much.

The thing that makes me laugh is that a few of us once had a relatively heated debate with SDs head of marketing in a pub at a forum meeting about the 'Boo-teek' market etc.

He basically said why were we using Fulltone Boosts etc when something like their pickup booster does the same thing for less money, and how it's all only marketing and snake oil etc and how they'd never get into the boutique side of things as they're all about value for money. Then a few years later these come out and I actually laughed out loud!

Well said Dave as for the people who will buy them...........people who can afford to pay ridiculous sums for  guitars, swap out the pups with the most expensive ones they can find, dont have a clue about playing and then hang them on the feckin wall in a presentation box for others to look at.
