Author Topic: Why oh why is it so difficult to find a decently priced, HSS, hardtail guitar??  (Read 6628 times)

These days I'm on the prowl for a new beater guitar, to replace my venerable Squier Stagemaster.

Thing is just, that the ideal thing of a Fat Strat sort of guitar, but with a Hardtail, seems nigh-on impossible to come by!
I hate strat trems with a passion, but I'd really, really like a Strat. I just really like the sound of a neck single coil.
Trouble is, Fender doesn't make any hardtails at a reasonable price level, nor does anyone else, it seems.

Other than that, I have a Tele bridge for humbucker lying around, that should fit standard fender spec, and others with a bit of work. That means a Tele is just as much a viable choice.
So what do I do?

- Suck it up and live with that arsing strat trem?

- Buy a mex-Tele and mod it (they're on sale these days)

- But the Peavey Reactor I mentioned in my other thread and mod it?

- Pray Fender release at least ONE bloody hardtail strat this next year?

- Pray for a miracle?

i thought charvel might offer something, but closest i can find is this

Obviously blocking off a normal strat trem will get you pretty damn close to what you want... but you could also look at picking up a hardtail strat body and transferring everything else over

Try getting a body made by USACG or Warmoth. You can add your Strat Neck straight to it seeing as they are licensed by Fender, so the fitting will be exact

We both know the boss of fender scandinavia. He should set you up with one of these :D

Fender '51?

I think there's very little chance of that.  Since they discontinued the hardtail models in the American Series, the only hardtail Strats in the whole range are the Robert Cray models (MIM and Custom Shop), unless I'm forgetting something.

yes, plus that one is loaded with Mules. I think he's just trying to persuade me to get that one so he can borrow it
He's tossed me that link more than a few times now

I actually have a Strat neck lying around, but I'm saving that one for another "touring" guitar, like my Pig'd single-hum Tele.

Tremol-no?

Well, here's where I start to look silly

As much as I dislike the strat trem's lack of actual usefulness and stability compared to say, a Floyd, my main gripe is still the cosmetic thing

I honestly think they just look like arse, and are asymmetrical in the worst possible way.

They sound better than a Floyd though.  And they're not as ludicrously difficult to set up or re-string.

But anyway, I prefer a proper hardtail.

My Strat has an American Deluxe trem and Gotoh 510 mini locking tuners and it's incredibly stable. It hardly goes out of tune, even with fairly aggressive trem use. Still, it will never be as reliable as a hardtail, and if you don't like how it looks, nothing else matters anyway.
