Calibrate Set's EQ the same, or not?
« on: November 15, 2011, 12:57:03 PM »
I just wondered, on the BKP site, it lists the EQ for the bridge pickups, and I wondered whether these are the same for the Neck P/U, or whether they are completely different? The reason I ask is because when emailing Tim whether I should get a CS neck or a HD neck, he said:

"The Holydiver neck is quite a bit brighter and more open than the fatter sounding CS neck. My fav with the HD in basswood is to use an Emerald neck."

If you look at the EQ for the CS, it clearly looks brighter than the HD, which kind of leads me to think that the neck EQs may be completely different.

The neck models are completely different from the bridge models.

In some sets the bridge is bright and the neck is warm, some sets the difference is less pronounced, some sets neck and bridge have different magnets..... the EQ charts are strictly for the bridge models.

This forum is probably the best source of info about the neck models.  But even now I'm not sure what some of them are supposed to sound like!

I've actually just spoke to Tim about it and this is what he said:

The EQs are an overall average of both pickups.

The CS neck isn't scooped at it, it's AV powered so you don't get that mid scoop of a ceramic.

Kindest Regards,

Tim

I'd really like to know how they compare in terms of EQ, when you compare them separatly though.

I wasn't aware of that!  Apologies for misleading you that it was just for the bridge models.

I can't see much point of having an "average", to be honest.  Not that I pay much attention to things like EQ charts.

I thought the EQs were for the bridge...and I should know. Maybe the method was changed just before publication.

I thought so too. But there is/must be a clear goal behind the calibrated sets.

Glad I found this page. This goes to show they're different.

Tim told me exactly the same as the 1st post a few months back. Now he's telling me if I want to know the EQ of the Holy Diver pickup, to look at the EQ on the Homepage. This is very confusing as he told me previously that the neck EQ's were different to the one listed/the bridge. If I was to take his advice now, it would show the CS neck being brighter than the HD, but he told me the opposite a few months back. I'm well confused. Could someone please help me :S

I also thought we had established that the graphs were for the bridge pickups only. I am very surprised at Tim's answer. And I agree with Philly that an average graph would not be of much help.

My suggestion would be to either publish graphs for both bridge and neck pickups or to take them down. It seems that on the majority they are more confusing than helpful.

As regards Holydiver vs. Cold Sweat: the bridge CS is definitely brighter and punchier than the HD bridge. Output is about the same.

Never had a HD neck but it has always been described as a bright, clear and slightly mid-scooped pickup. The CS neck has good brightness and clarity, too but I would not describe it as mid-scooped.

Cheers Stephan

Cheers for that Stephen. I just got mega confused yesterday haha. I think I'll probably go with another Cold Sweat as I'm not liking the description of the Holy Diver for what I'm after at this exact time. Maybe in the future though :)
