I would add I'm glad James did his therapy/rehab, I'm sure he's in a much better place personally now, which is great.  I don't know if that added to Metallica's decline or if it might've just happened anyway, but perhaps it would've been best if the band had just called it a day.

Oh damn straight I'm glad James sorted himself out, it would have ended in tears otherwise. But Metallica is definitely secondry in his life now, leaving Lars with the reins. Without James as a foil to tell him when his ideas are bullshiteeeeeeeeeeeeee, instead he just goes along with them.

I'm sure James just sees Metallica as a day job now. It's a shame knowing that he and Pep would probably enjoy going off and doing thier thang. I think when Pep didn't get the bassist gig, he essentially ceased being arsed about it all.

Mind you it all makes interesting watching for the videos. Some Kind of Monster is brilliant. Shows just how massively out of touch they are with 'real life'. Band councilling, I mean, really?! Genius car crash tv though.

Check this pretentious shite out..

METALLICA's Lars Ulrich Says 'The View' Video Is "Possibly The Best Ever Made"

The Darren Aronofsky-directed video for 'The View', from LOU REED & METALLICA's album Lulu, will premiere exclusively today (Saturday, December 3rd) at 10 AM on IFC.com and will be promoted on the IFC television network. Although the original plan was to shoot a performance video of 'Iced Honey', when everyone got together, it became obvious 'The View' was the way to go.

"The first time I heard 'The View' I was stunned," said Darren Aronofsky. "I had never heard anything like it. Half was all Lou. The other half all Metallica. It was a marriage that on the surface made no sense, but the fusion changed the way I thought about both artists and morphed into something completely fresh and new. I couldn't stop listening to it. Lou's crushing lyrics, and the band's incredible licks. It's so original and that's why I wanted to work on it."

"I am very excited about working with Darren Aronofsky on our powerful video 'The View,'" said Lou Reed. "I feel Darren understood the power and range of the emotions fueled by the fire of Metallica. His strength and spirit are on display in every frame and I think he has caught the anger, rage and anguish at the bottom of the soul of real rock. A literate man for a literate song. As exciting as the music and that's a big compliment. Possibly the best video ever made. Black and white filmic noir."

"To have a song like 'The View' visualized through the eyes and magic touch of Darren Aronofsky is beyond my wildest dream," said Metallica's Lars Ulrich. "The marriage between images, music, and words in this video is indescribably thrilling and I am so next level psyched to be involved in a project that brings together the creative minds of Darren Aronofsky, Lou Reed ... and The 'Tallica."

A collaboration between Reed and Metallica, Lulu includes a set of extended songs inspired by German expressionist Frank Wedekind's early 20th century plays Earth Spirit and Pandora's Box, and were a rewrite of Edgar Allan Poe's, The Raven, which emerged as a graphic novel on Fantagraphics Press.

Lulu has been panned by critics around the globe and sales have been dismal.

Actually that was nowhere near as bad as I expected....  I feel like I should be embarrassed to say that, which is irrational.

But I guess I'd get bored after two hours of the same....

I don't really think Aronofsky brought much to the table ("The Table") though.  I love his films, but that seemed like a fairly run-of-the-mill music video to me....  :|

Mustaine on stage with metallica? I never thought that would happen.

Does that mean the grudge is finally over?

If so, that must be a huge weight lifted from the shoulders of all of them.

I'm wondering if "Performance Enhancement Coach" Phil Towle had something to do with this.

EDIT - I know he stopped working with them a while back. I can just imagine him calculating all the money he could make by spouting nonsense such as "you've got to move backwards before you can move forwards"

I think they sorted out their issues despite that bloke, not because of him.

He seemed to make the same mistake Bob Rock did, in a way - forgetting his real job and thinking he was part of the band.

I'd say the improved relationship with Mustaine is just a sign that they've all finally grown up (of course $$$ probably paid a part too)
