Those $%&#ing amplifiers!
« on: November 23, 2011, 04:59:53 PM »
Hi all. The thing is that i've been on the lookout for a new Amp for a year now. i got 13.000,- Dkr to spend. Its around 1400£

I've always like recto's, but im also a huge 5150 fan, and my experience is that they cant sound like each others xD

The things i like about each of them is.
Recto - Enormous bottom end, and the fullest bodied sound on the market.
5150/6505. - The Metallic sound, the tight feel and the flame thrower top end.

I kinda want something in between those two. A bottom end which does not get flappy, and is easy to control. A voicing which does not require alot of gain, to make things moving. I have to use alot of gain on some amps to make the palm mutes convincing.

My fav pickup is the painkiller, so i love mids and lots of top end :)

The amps i've been looking at have been these so far:
6505(duh)
Randall V2
Engl Blackmore
and loads others.

Nice features would be something similar to the 6505's resonance swich where you can add more focus on the bottom end. A really neat feature.

I have a tendency to roll the treble back on my amps and use the presence for top end instead.

I play grindcore, i like mids, i like a very, very punchy sound with loads of bottom and top end to fill it up :)

Please come with some suggestions on amps i should check out, and youtube clips are also more than welcome.

PS.
I Use a Mesa recto 4x12 oversized rectifier cab :)

the blackmore might be a bit too vintage-sounding for that, maybe. it's not just as out-and-out br00tal as some of teh other engls.

I added a mid-sweep to my 5150 and I can get Rectoish tones out of the rhythm channel boosted or with a few resistors snipped out effectively turning it into a meatier and less aggressive lead2. Been meaning to get a dual pot so I can try out Blackstar's ISF circuit. Of course, the first things I did was karate chop that fizz down a notch and add a bias pot. Bias pot is a must have. Can't believe Peavey continues to omit that.
If you get a 5150/6505, I'd have no problem sharing my notes on what changes did what and you(or a buddy or kidnap Toe-knee he's closer than I am) could mod that little girl into Satan's whore.

Leaving a 400 lbs waitress a tip is still considered cow-tipping and is a felony in some states.

I'd like to see the details of the ISF pot if you wouldn't mind emailing that to me mate.

my savage se sounds like a more versatile, higher gain blackmore. it's discontinued, though.

I must say, the Blackmore can do "brutal" just fine :)

i never said it didn't, but it is one of the more vintage-voiced engls. Vintage voiced for an engl is still pretty heavy, though (unless you're talking about a classic)

I've always wanted a Ampeg Vh140C. But they do not exist in Scandinavia.

What im seriously considering too is a Laboga Mr. Hector. The Price is within my budget. I've tried one too and i was stunned! The only concern i have is the lack of a presence knob.

Opinions?
