Anything out there similar to a Peavey 6505?
« on: November 29, 2011, 09:58:24 AM »
I just wondered if there's any other amp out there that provides a roar to give the 6505 a run for it's money? I'm looking at getting the 6505, but I want to keep my options open. My limit is up to £1000

Thanks :)

There's the 6505+...

Alternatively, you could get a 5150 or 5150-II (what with them being identical to the 6505 and 6505+, but second hand) :)

Yh, I know about the other Peavey amps. I mean something that's made by a complete different manufacturer.

And how do you rate the Orange?

The Bugera 6262 is based on the 6505 and it slays!

I've actually got one. Great sounding amp, but it broke 3 times. Trying to contact them was an absolute nightmare. They just ignored me constantly, so I sent a general enquiry by email on my other email address pretending to be someone else, just asking about release dates. And guess what? I got an email back the next day. Finally a month later after sending bout 10 emails, and finally threatening them with trading standards, I got a response. After that they was pretty good about it. I just think it's ridiculous that they don't advertise a contact email address on either the Behringer or Bugera website (it took me a week to searching through forums to find an email address to send to. Apparantly only authorized dealers have access to the email); just a silly little 'Ask a question' function which is like their own forum, which to this date, 7 months later I have no longer had anyone reply to my original query.

For this, I don't trust them in cases of emergencies. Id rather not wait another 6 weeks to get a replacement, and then have the following 2 break. And it wasn't the clip situation btw, it was faulty tubes and faulty dome lights, with one having faulty wiring for the FX loop

Thats a shame man-i had mine for close to 3 years without any issues, recently sold it as it was my backup head and wanted to buy some new pickups. The distorted sound is awesome and has very good cleans also.

Maybe  get a 6505+ as mentioned before, or a 5150?

Yeah I'll start using it as my backup head when I get my new one. I probably will end up getting the 6505, but I thought I'd ask people about alternatives first. You never know, I may find that hidden Jem, lol.

Framus Cobra. Save a little more for new or buy used. It shares a bit of circuitry with the 5150/6505 with the cold clipping gain stage and all, but it has an actual clean channel instead of the 5150/6505's neutered lead channel.

Just had a look, and I can't find it new or second hand anywhere in the UK :/

To be quite honest, if you're after a 6505/5150, then you might as well just go ahead and get one. You know what you're going to get, you know it's going to be awesome, and those things are built like absolute tanks. Great value, great sound and a thoroughly worthwhile investment for the discerning metal guitarist :)

I just want something with a better clean channel tbh. Possibly a bit more versatile too

Then get a 6505+

Unless you want specifically very good clean channel, rather than merely a usable one. The crunch sound on a 5150-II is actually very decent IMHO.

That's what I mean, a better clean channel than the 6505+ (should have actually added the plus, my fault). I wouldn't get the 6505 since it's a shared EQ.

It's just, as well as all out metal, I like to play progressive metal, as well as play some lighter styles too.

As much as I like the sound of the 6505/+'s lead tone, it just doesn't tick all the boxes. It'd be like buying a guitar that had great woods, great pickups, a great sound...but the neck played like a £50 Cash Generator guitar lol. I just want to know if there's anything else out there in that price range, that is capable of portraying the Peavey's lead tone (obviously it's not going to be exact), but provide some really good tones for other genres of music. Preferably one with 6L6 and 12AX7 tubes.
