Filling a P90 gap?
« on: December 05, 2011, 12:46:13 AM »
Just a quick thought...
The Supermassive P90 has 10.6KΩ output and the Pig90 has 21.5KΩ output: more that the double in difference. The voicing is almost the same, having the Pig90 more midrange crunch.
Has anyone been wondering how would a P90 in the 14KΩ range sound like?
Let me take the question from another side: would a Pig90 neck, with a 15KΩ output, placed in the bridge position, be a good answer for filling this 10.6KΩ-21.5KΩ gap? Would it sound like a P90 version of a Painkiller or Crawler, for example?

I think the big jump in DC resistance is due to the different wire used in the pickups - 43AWG in the Supermassive, 45 AWG in the Pig 90.

The thinner wire has a much higher DC resistance for the same length of wire, so the big "jump" in DC doesn't mean the Pig 90 has twice the output of the Supermassive.

You'll see the same thing with the Strat pickups - a big "gap" in DC resistance between the Irish Tours/Slow Hands and the Trilogies/Sinners.

Assuming the Pig 90 neck also has 45 AWG wire, at 15k it may actually be relatively low output.

Now, could they make a 15k P-90 pickup using 43 AWG wire?  I don't know, it might be that the coil is "full" at around 10-11k.
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM

You're confusing DC resistance and output. Output depends on build type (HB / SC / etc), magnet, wire material and gauge and of course the number of turns. DC resistance depends on the wire material and gauge and the number of turns, so it's only meaningful when used to compare 2 pups with the same build, magnets, and wire. The Crawler's bridge is more than twice the DC resistance of the neck, but it's by no mean twice as loud.
Have: Crawlers, BGF 50/52s, Mules, ABomb, RiffRaff
Had : Slowhands (n&m), Trilogy (b)

+1. My VHII doesn't have so much less output then my Crawler. I think the different voicing is way more noticable then the outputdifference, which is as I said not much.
Mules, VHII, Crawler, MM's, IT's, BG50's.
