Ar$e! My Telly Just Broke!!!
« on: December 10, 2011, 09:47:56 AM »
My lovely big 30 inch Samsung CRT is refusing to turn on!!!  Changed the plug fuse, still no power!

What happens with CRTs these days?  Are there still people out there that repair them?  Or has consumerism got to a point that we're throwing stuff like this away?

probably lash it away to be fair. though you could probably find a repair guy. dunno what they would charge mind. I wouldn't try to fix it yourself.
nothing at all happens when you turn on it? no life? does it make a 'boing' noise?

No, nothing - it's an old (ish) CRT, so there's usually and almighty thump when you power it up.  That's why I thought maybe the fuse, but apparently not...

damn.
maybe buy a nice flatscreen with a build it freeview or freesat tuner? haha.
I miss using CRT's. I think the picture quality on a good CRT is great. shame after digital switch over you'd be sticking mpeg compressed pap into it.

agreed, the picture quality on crts was awesome, and more natural (to my eyes, anyway, admittedly i wear glasses so that probably isn't helping). Just the big problems being the weight and size.

yeah. I think its actually close to impossible to make a widescreen CRT past a certain size due to the strength and weight of the glass envelope. It's hard to get broadcast grade 1 CRT's now. factories just aren't making them

I sympathise !!  and I think you might be right with the   "consumerism got to a point that we're throwing stuff like this away"....

Anyway, to the point ( :)) I have a 27" or somthing like that, Samsung Flat screen HD (full 1080, blah blah) TV that is surplace to my requirements. That is, I bought it new in Currys some months ago, (when not thinking straight ! - i.e. I don't watch TV - havn't done for some years !!) anyways, it has been switched on and run for a few hours (until the novelty wore off, and I remembered that I don't watch TV !!) and is now collecting dust.
If you can cover the cost of my new compressor pedal, it's yours. I live on the south coast and could deliver as far as London (preferably south London).
PM me if you are interested....

I sold my 32" Toshiba CRT last year.

It was a What Hi-Fi award winner, cost about £900 (I think) seven or eight years ago.... 40 quid.  :|

And I've seen them go for less.

Anyway, you can probably get yours repaired unless it's really old.  You're not "adding value", but depends how much you want to keep it, I guess.

^ wow that's even worse than you normally do on ebay with guitars!

but that sucks. ours just died so we had to get something new. if it hadn't we'd probably have kept it out of spite rather than let it go for £40

Indeed, we're having to carefully nurse our dwindling stock of properly calibratable CRT monitors as you cannot get replacements. The image quality on them is still better than even the best Eizo monitors which are our only realistic alternative. I am going to be very sad the day my Trinitron puts its paws up.

Ain't you in Huddersfield?

I drove there to pick up our telly. Did a lot of research on the net and it was the cheapest place (at the time) by a long shot. It was so cheap that I was willing to drive there with a near termincal case of the thruppany bits  PDT_033

It was behind one of the posh car garages, next to some traffic lights.
Advice worth what you just paid for it.

I never thought of it like that!

But it was time to move up to HD, so the old set had to go.

I was actually glad to get anything for it - the main thing, in effect, was for someone to take it away because it weighed a bloody ton and I had no way in the world of moving it.

And now I have a 42" plasma I can lift myself.  :)

Tv's are just not worth repairing now.  generally you are talking close to the cost of a new tv for anything major

so erm, try your home contents insurance to see if they will do anything.  you never know

one of my mates lost a new tv to a wii related incident a few years back. after he held onto it for a few months thinking it must still be worth something we decided to leave it on the street outside his house one night.  Gone 5 minutes later!   cheaper than paying anyone to dispose of it

Got a Toshiba 37" LCD X3030D for sale, all boxed up and ready to pick up (god knows what it'd cost to send, but I could). Mint condition. £200.
