One for Philly Q...
« on: December 16, 2011, 05:18:22 PM »
This is not a great pic but it's the only one I could find on the net:

It's the black '59 Junior that caught my eye. There's a nice feature about it and a 1960 sibling in this month's Vintage Guitar magazine which is where my attention was drawn to them. They're not refins and though you can't really tell from the photo, they have really beautiful tortoiseshell pick guards. I reckon they might be the prettiest Juniors I've seen. According to the article the Gibson Custom Shop are considering a reissue based on these two newly discovered originals. The guy who found and bought them, Dave Hinson, from Killer Vintage in St. Louis, said in the article that though he'd heard tell of a few black Juniors being produced, he'd never seen one until these two turned up. I love stories like this where something amazing comes to light after many years and I do really like the look of these very much.

What a find! Gibson would certainly do something great if the reissue models based on these fine specimens.

I would look soooooo good with one of them slung around my neck  :D

I'll see if I can get a photo of the magazine article images, the one above really doesn't do them justice.

It's funny, it seems so familiar you imagine there must be other black Juniors out there somewhere.... but search Google images and there's nothing - the Billie Joe Armstrong (singlecut) and some budget sort-of-copies.

It may be genuinely unique.  :)

I preffer the doublecut juniors to the singlecut ones. I really don't know why as normally I'm no real fan of doublecut guitars.

One of the theories mentioned in the article is that they were a custom order for a shop, again there have been rumours to that effect for years but no-one knew if it was true. If it was a mini-run for a store there might be a few others but still as rare as hen's teeth. Much rarer than those vulgar flame topped Standards. ;)

I like both!  :D

I guess if I absolutely had to pick one Jr over the other, I'd go for a singlecut, but I love the doublecuts too.

When it comes to LP Specials, I definitely prefer the single over the double.
