opinions for HH Strat bridge pup + RY neck pup
« on: December 28, 2011, 10:45:44 PM »
i want to replace the current bridge PAF type 9.7k pup with a BK pup. the neck has a Rebel Yell in it and i want to keep it as i just like it a lot.

i know, a RY bridge would be an obvious choice, i'd like a few extra choices too.

strat is, alder body, mahogany neck/kingwood fretboard, 500k tone pots. i use pio .022uf for bridge and pio .015uf for neck.

nailbomb looks like a good match?  ceramics i think too harsh for me ears.

The RY could be a tad bright in the bridge. Nailbomb yes if you dig the uppermidspike. A Holydiver is an option too. It is supposed to have stellar fat creamy leadtones.
Mules, VHII, Crawler, MM's, IT's, BG50's.

i now see what your saying about the nailbomb & not sure i would like that spike. holydiver does sound good via the sound clips. more modern sounding than the paf type i want to replace and suited for bolt-on necks like me strat.

think i'll order a holydiver

Holydiver sounds like an ideal choice.

What kind of music do you play and what tone are you after?

these things are hard to describe but here goes:

primus, larry laLonde, floyd, mars volta, interplanatary jazz[;-)], rory gallagher's more bluesy riffs, opeth, some pagey licks, (all the kings & mr. b. guy) & the like, etc

though the above isn't a boxed in generalization but certainly representative of guitar tones, guitar soundcapes & player influences that i like.

i'm not a speed player at all & never will be yet having an emotional internal volcano at times it is nice to have the power avail like from a more aggressive pup though probably not like an agreesive ceramic thrasher type. that wouldn't be me. i'm still developing my own voicing but the above would certainly be a good generalization of what i like.

i got brain lock and haven't purchased the holydiver yet cuz i started listening a lot to the nailbomb. i saw many posts on the web linking the holydiver to that 80' sound and i'm not a big fan of it, generally speaking of course.

i have a RY in the neck position & sonically the nailbomb would balance well with a RY, yes? i can fine tune the balance making adjustments via pup heights, screw heights, etc.

I believe I have seen the Alnico Nailbomb once being described as an overwound Rebel Yell. It should definitely match well with the Rebel Yell neck. Since the RY neck is similar to the Cold Sweat neck it should also balance well with the Holydiver bridge.

For aggressiveness I would rank the three pickups as follows: RY, then A-Bomb, then HD.

For output: A-Bomb, followed very closely by HD, then RY

For highs: RY before the other two.

For bass: A-Bomb before the other two.

For center mids: HD before RY, then A-Bomb.

For high mids: RY before HD, then A-Bomb

For low mids: HD before A-Bomb, then RY

Cheers Stephan
