Impulsive buy due to Richtone's irresistable 42%(£799!) dicount on this lovely Tokai 145swa goldtop.
Beautifully made as usual with my only criticisms being the log pots(all or nothing almost) and the tailpiece is a bit high
from the body.Other than that it sounds great and intonates well which was my biggest fear.
It honks.
photo, dirty clip and clean clip , middle position, treble then neck in both cases

I had one of those, very briefly, a few months ago!  Love the '54 style goldtop - mainly due to the wraparound bridge - but I took an immediate dislike to the particular Tokai I had and sent it straight back.

You got it for a good price, though - they were trying to sell those for £1,499 for ages but no-one was going to buy at that price.  Then they reduced to £999.  And now £799?  Have they got a sale on?

(Edit:  Just looked at their site and they don't have any Tokais any more.  I thought they were the main dealer...?  :?  )

Congrats on the NGD! I must say it looks very sexy.

I was going to say that one forumite defenitely will rave about a P90 goldtop with wraparound bridge, but seems that I have been beaten at the finish line  :D

oh you went with that one? sweet :D I had half an eye on it myself (don't worry, though, i decided not to bother)

I saw the sale and there were a couple of things that I *almost* pulled the trigger on (including that goldtop), but in the end decided that either I didn't need them or couldn't really justify them enough (and of course they were teh ones with teh big savings  ) or for the few things I maybe could justify the savings weren't enough to twist my arm into buying right now... i'd rather wait and make a more considered purchase even if i did pay slightly more.

Philly: I think they've become a gibson dealer now and as such have had to drop the tokais. I think they're selling their tokais and edwards off on ebay under the name of roninguitars (something like that, but don't quote me as i don't know for sure that it's them... but the pics are exactly the same  ).

Thanks Dave, that makes sense.  I have seen ronin guitars on eBay and figured out they were Richtone but didn't know why they were using an "alias".

So, could be the last chance to pick up some of those Tokais, then....  :?

yeah :(

i mean there are a few other tokai dealers in the UK but richtone was the big one :(

I probably should have seen it coming, though- i mean he'd never had teh tokai fender copies, and had been a fender dealer for a while. stands to sense that he'd take the gibson dealership if offered, too.

Don't get me wrong, i'm not blaming him, i'm well aware that gibsons will sell better to most guitarists. Just it's a shame to lose a stockist who had a pretty good stock of the tokais.

i had a feeling you had and then got rid of one Philly Q, by inference in a few threads, but wondered why you got rid, especially as you seem well informed on this type of guitar .(which i'm certainly not).
i'd had my eye on them since the beginning merely through interest and seriously thought about it when i saw the same
ones at roninguitars at 999.then choucus posted a vid of a 54 goldtop which eased my worry of intonation probs as well
as impressing me with its tone.
when i saw it on the xmas sale for 799 it was a no brainer, i think there where 2 so someone also thought so.
it was a toss up between this and a Edwards 335,even more beautiful looking but the Tokai had more discount!
thanks all for your interest.

That's a great guitar at a very sensible price. Nice work! Great clips too, really shows it off well. Like the tone a lot.

I'd been watching them for over a year.  I wanted one so badly, I almost took the plunge at £1,499 but that was too much even for an idiot like me.

Then they finally went to £999 but (as always with LPs) I was concerned about the weight.  So I emailed them and asked them which was the lightest, then to be certain I phoned and spoke to the owner/manager just to confirm I was buying the right one..... and when it turned up it was a pound heavier than they'd said.

Great neck, felt good, but it was 9+ pounds!  I was also a bit pissed off that the bridge sat so high, like yours (just personal preference - I always think Gibson-types feel better when the bridge sits low to the body).

So back it went - which was the right thing to do, but stupidly I replaced it with an Edwards which I also didn't like.  And subsequently sold at an enormous loss.  :|

It's weird, Richtone is a well-run business but I've never had a good buying experience with them!

i see, mines a good 10 pounder, doesn't bother me, the bridge stud thing must be to do with the neck angle, minute
differences changing the level to which the bridge needs raising, this is a mere quible for the price though.

Yeah, a tiny difference in neck angle has quite an effect on the bridge height.  It's not a big deal I'm sure, just a personal preference thing!  :)
