To me VH has never done anything good other than Catherine.

The rest is a bit too "mum & dad music" for me

hmm dont think you could say that about their first 3 albums or fair warning, they were hard rock master pieces, before middle age and dodgy keyboards took over

ok heres my input, im 17 years old, i hate new music i love hair metal and pretty much all rockn roll. i Hate grunge and evreything that comes out now-a-days, beisdes nirvana (wich from what i seeis the band that killed hair metal) but i still like them, van halen is $%&#ing amazing! give them a brek, look back, there not real great at picking a first song to be realesed on any of there albums, fair warining is by far the best album theyve done ;). but still im sure the rest of the album will be great,they realesed clips of some new songs, theyre $%&#ing ripe! awsome! WARRANT IS THE BEST BAND EVER THO!

Jani Lane was a good songwriter but plagued by his own demons.

Sadly hardly any of the rest of the band were up to playing on their own albums.
The earliest ones featured the great guitar talents of Mike Slamer- formerly of City Boy, later of Streets and Steelhouse Lane (both worth checking out).

Current Warrant vocalist Robert Mason is a very good singer  too - having previously played with Lynch Mob etc

Steel Panther's "Stripper Girl" from the Feel The Steel is to some degree a rewrite of Warrant's "Heaven" from the DRFSR album

Having heard "Tattoo" a few times on the radio now, without the distraction of the video, I quite like it.  It's not amazing, but better than I would've expected at this point.

I think one of the things that has inevitably changed is Eddie's guitar sound, as well as the production style.

I guess many of us would have liked it to be a logical next step to the last great VH & Roth album (1984), but so much time has passed and things will change.

I just found that Eddie's guitar track lacked any riffs, was a bit too background filler and with a tone that had more modern growling mids than his tone of old (which was very distinctive IMO)

Despite our initial negative reaction, it's interesting to see that the album is getting rave reviews.

And referring back to the "opposition", I haven't heard Chickenfoot III but the current single "Different Devil" is bloody awful bland pap  :? .  Maybe I should buy both albums (not that there's any need to compare directly, since they're not really two opposing factions, but I do find it interesting!)

Give Chickenfoot III a good listen to, PQ - it's a grower, and I'm really liking it now.

for me, chickenfoot III DID grow.  into a stinking pile of incredibly bland and boring chicken excrement.  i try not to be too derogatory about music, since i know my taste is not other people's, but this album was hugely dissappointing.  completely awful

Just listening to the whole album, on first listening She's The Woman (2nd track) is GREAT, real old VH vibe.  After that, well, I'm on track 6 and it's average as hell.  Lets see where it goes from here....

Guitar tone is much less processed than I've heard it in recent years, tick!  :D

Track 10, Outta Space, now we're talking - classic VH riffage if ever I heard it, might be a grower this album.

overall, it's not a knockout cohesive album, but by far and away the best thing I've heard since the F.U.C.K days and VERY old-school VH in feel and vibe.

Although I don't dislike Sammy or the "Van Hagar" period in principle, I think the only really good album they did was 5150.  After that it all started to get a bit flabby and bloated - Van Halen should be all about short, snappy songs and 35-minute albums!
